House defeats Iraq pullout in Republican tactic
WASHINGTON (Reuters) -
In a maneuver designed to discredit Iraq war critics, the
Republican-led House of Representatives overwhelmingly defeated a
resolution on Friday to pull U.S. troops immediately from Iraq.
Republicans, who introduced the surprise resolution hours before
lawmakers were to start a Thanksgiving holiday recess, said the vote
was intended to show backing for U.S. forces.
Democrats denounced it as a political stunt and an attack on Rep. John
Murtha of Pennsylvania, a leading Democratic military hawk who stunned
his colleagues on Thursday by calling for troops to be withdrawn as
quickly as possible.

How could all of this have happened HERE in the USA? This is the kind of
stuff we hear about from lesser nations. Politicians sending our young
people to die for NOTHING. If it weren't so tragic, it would be a cartoon.

It was Duncan Hunters bill they tried to pass off as Murtha's and got
caught dead to rights by parliamtary carification. That was why the
democrats as a body voted to keep it off the floor, but the GOP kept it
alive by majority, denated it, the vted it down as an 11th hour stunt.
Nothing more.

How totally misinformed and wrong you are. Murtha's proposed resolution was
not the "surprise resolution". It never made it to the floor. The
republicans introduced their own, and it was a watered down version of
Murtha's, which the republicans intentionally designed to elicit "no" votes.
http://usgovinfo.about.com/b/a/216940.htm
Excerpt:
Why House Republicans Moved to Withdraw Troops from Iraq
On Friday, Republicans in the House of Representatives introduce for
consideration a resolution requiring the nearly immediate withdrawal of all
U.S. troops from Iraq. The resolution, after a heated debate, was defeated
403-3. Why would House Republicans, who, along with President Bush, support
continued U.S. military presence in Iraq, propose a resolution to pull the
troops out?
Republican representatives actually proposed their resolution to immediately
withdraw the troops in an attempt to force a show of congressional support
for continuation of the Iraq war. The Republicans knew their resolution
would fail and were counting on the resounding "No" vote it ultimately
received.
http://tinyurl.com/8bybq
The nonbinding resolution, defeated 403-3, was offered by the majority
Republicans to demonstrate that the idea of forcing a quick end to the U.S.
occupation of Iraq has scant support.
Text of Murtha's FULL proposed resolution, which was not the one called for
by the republicans for a vote on the floor:
Murtha Resolution To Redeploy U.S. Forces from Iraq:
IN THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES
November 17, 2005
MR. MURTHA introduced the following joint resolution, which was referred
to the Committee on _____________________
Whereas Congress and the American People have not been shown clear,
measurable progress toward establishment of stable and improving security in
Iraq or of a stable and improving economy in Iraq, both of which are
essential to "promote the emergence of a democratic government";
Whereas additional stabilization in Iraq by U, S. military forces cannot
be achieved without the deployment of hundreds of thousands of additional U
S. troops, which in turn cannot be achieved without a military draft;
Whereas more than $277 billion has been appropriated by the United States
Congress to prosecute U.S. military action in Iraq and Afghanistan;
Whereas, as of the drafting of this resolution, 2,079 U.S. troops have
been killed in Operation Iraqi Freedom;
Whereas U.S. forces have become the target of the insurgency,
Whereas, according to recent polls, over 80% of the Iraqi people want U.S.
forces out of Iraq;
Whereas polls also indicate that 45% of the Iraqi people feel that the
attacks on U.S. forces are justified;
Whereas, due to the foregoing, Congress finds it evident that continuing
U.S. military action in Iraq is not in the best interests of the United
States of America, the people of Iraq, or the Persian Gulf Region, which
were cited in Public Law 107-243 as justification for undertaking such
action;
Therefore be it
I) Resolved by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United
States of America in
2) Congress assembled,
3) That:
4) Section 1. The deployment of United States forces in Iraq, by direction
of Congress, is
5) hereby terminated and the forces involved are to be redeployed at the
earliest practicable
6) date.
7) Section 2. A quick-reaction U.S. force and an over-the-horizon presence
of U.S Marines
8) shall be deployed in the region.
9) Section 3 The United States of America shall pursue security and
stability in Iraq
10) through diplomacy.
MR. MURTHA introduced the following joint resolution...
"...Therefore be it Resolved
by the Senate and House of Representatives
of the United States of America in Congress assembled,
That: Section 1. The deployment of United States forces
in Iraq, by direction of Congress, is... hereby terminated
and the forces involved are to be redeployed..."

I noticed you left out the democratic parliamentary call for clarification

It was not even close to Murthas. The bill submitted by hunter was first

That is not the point kid. The republicans did not introduce his proposal,
the introduced a sham by Duncan Hunter. You kids have an allergy to the

Congresswoman Jean Schmidt responded on the floor of the House:
"Yesterday I stood at Arlington
National Cemetery attending the funeral of a young marine in my
district. He believed in what we were doing is the right thing and had
the courage to lay his life on the line to do it. A few minutes ago I
received a call from Colonel Danny Bubp, Ohio Representative from the
88th district in the House of Representatives. He asked me to send
Congress a message: Stay the course. He also asked me to send
Congressman Murtha a message, that cowards cut and run, Marines never
do. Danny and the rest of America and the world want the assurance from
this body - that we will see this through."

introducing his "cut and run" bill the other day.
I could think of the money and time your parents wasted on educating you,

What makes you think my parents were alive when I was going to school

MR. MURTHA introduced the following joint resolution...

"...Therefore be it Resolved
by the Senate and House of Representatives
of the United States of America in Congress assembled,
That: Section 1. The deployment of United States forces
in Iraq, by direction of Congress, is... hereby terminated
and the forces involved are to be redeployed..."

Liar. Democrat John Murtha introduced the resolution. Get your facts

How totally misinformed and wrong you are. Murtha's proposed resolution
was
not the "surprise resolution". It never made it to the floor.
Murtha's resolution was amended as is common practice in the congress.
Murtha never the less is the author and the introducer of the bill.

I find it hard to comprehend how it is possible you don't consider the
following:
(1) Ousting Saddam caused Libya to shutdown it's nuclear weapons research
facility. You consider that nothing? I figure that alone is worth
$200,000,000,000.00 and the lives of 2,000.
(2) Ousting Saddam put a stop to Saddam's financial backing of Palestinian
terrorists. You consider that nothing?
(3) Ousting Saddam forced thousand's of terrorists to come out of hiding
where we could kill them, away from the US. That doesn't make you feel
safer?
(4) Saddam supported terrorists. We're in a war against terrorists and the
supporters of terrorists, not just the ones behind 9/11. And Saddam
supported Libya's nuclear weapons research facility. Am I to understand you
support Saddam's efforts to support terrorists? Am I to understand you
support the likes of Saddam being able to give nuclear weapons to
terrorists? You're amazing!
But then, I've heard reports Democrats support the terrorists and their
activities. I take it that's your viewpoint as well?

The words don't mean anything. Where were the votes? Where were the votes
for the pullout you guys have wanted all along. You say all that we have
gone through is for nothing. I disagree. Iraq was long lonhg overdue.
After checking myself, I would suggest that you begin by looking in the
mirror. When the Demcorats had the chance for a withdrawal from Iraq, they
crowed but then showed their true colors by how they voted.

And the Republican tactic worked, didn't it?
It got that gutless, spineless wonder Pelosi to lead all but
three Democrats into voting to continue the quagmire.
This time you can't blame the liar Bush. He was in Japan.
Now the party has endorsed continuing the quagmire - and no one
can say they were fooled into doing it.
You want to know what "cut and run" is? At long last someone
stood up to the Bush-Cheney-Rice-Powell lies. And then
immediately he and Pelosi and all but three others ran away from

might have done the right thing. And Pelosi couldn't have that,
could she?

"We're going to sue your *****, AND your balls!" -- Scientology's leader
It's far more than just a bluff.
As many of you know, very few Democrats have actually called for a full and
immediate withdrawal of our troops from Iraq. Instead, what we have is a
handful of Democratic supporters with highly publicized images who express
the extreme views. Then, since these extreme views hurt the Bush
administration in favor of the Demoratic administration, virtually all
Democrats refuse to denounce these extremist views.
This is the same manner in which John Kerry refused to denounce the
extermist views publicized by 527 groups in favor of the Democrats during
the 2004 election. While John Kerry himself could not make such extremist
statements, he was quite thrilled to have the support of virtually all of
the 527's and their extreme pronouncements. As we know, when the Swift boat
veterans spoke out against Kerry, Kerry threw a major temper tantrum. Kerry
demanded Bush denounce them. Bush did denounce the Swift boat veterans
along with denounciing all 527 groups. Yet, when Bush asked Kerry to do
likewise, Kerry refused.
What we've just experienced with the demand for a vote on total and
immediate withdraw from Iraq is that in it's virtually unanimous rejection,
Republicans can know officially publicize rejections of anyone who calls for
a complete and immediate withdrawal from Iraq and do so with the ability to
point to a near unanimous lack of support for such by the Democratic party.
Without the vote, such a declaration would not have been possible. In
essence, this so-called farse by the Republicans has provided a tool by
which Republicans can claim the backing of the entire Demcratic party in
denouncing extremist views regarding Iraq.
Please note, this won't be the last. Now that the Republicans have learned
a new trick to get the extremists under control, look for more instances of
it in the future. Now, if Democrats would denounce extremist views when
they happen instead of ignoring them when those view benefit the Democrats,
Republicans wouldn't have to resort to such extreme measures. What goes
around, comes around.
