Wal-Mart: We're not afraid to say Merry Christmas
No. 1 retailer has decided to abandon its generic 'Happy Holidays'
greeting in favor of 'Merry Christmas.'
November 9 2006: 12:19 PM EST
NEW YORK (CNNMoney) -- Wal-Mart has told its employees that it's OK to
once again greet shoppers by saying "Merry Christmas" this holiday
season instead of the generic "Happy Holidays."
CNN confirmed that Wal-Mart will announce Thursday that it plans to
use the phrase "Merry Christmas" in products and around its stores
this holiday season.

The announcement comes a year after religious groups such as The
American Family Association and The Catholic League boycotted
retailers including Wal-Mart last holiday season for excluding the
word "Christmas" from products sold in stores.
"We, quite frankly, have learned a lesson from last year," Wal-Mart
spokeswoman Linda Blakley told USA Today in a separate report. "We're
not afraid to use the term 'Merry Christmas.' We'll use it early, and
we'll use it often."
Besides resurrecting its Christmas pitch, the retailer is also
determined to be the leader in this year's holiday price wars.
The November-December holiday shopping period is a critical time for
merchants since it can account for as much as 50 percent of their
profits and sales.
To that end, Wal-Mart was the first out of the gate to chop prices on
toys and electronics much ahead of its competitors like Target
(Charts), Toys 'R Us, Costco (Charts) and others.
To support its Christmas deals, the report said Wal-Mart will launch
TV ads next week that trumpet "Christmas." It's changing the name of
its seasonal decorations department to "The Christmas Shop" from "The
Holiday Shop."
Moreover, Wal-Mart stores will play Christmas carols throughout the
holiday period and about 60 percent more merchandise will be labeled
as "Christmas" rather than "holiday" items, the paper said.

Well, I guess that's useful labeling. If they call it a Holiday
Shop, I might have assumed it has products for holidays
such as Hanukkah as well as Christmas, and products for
the holidays in general. But calling it a Christmas Shop
let's me know that it's specifically Christmas products,
and if that's not what I'm looking for, I need to go somewhere
else.

Most of the products are Chinese so in actuality it's the Chinese

The election is over. Why is The Right still pushing this non-issue
down people's throats?
When educated, non-judgemental people hear "Merry Christmas", they know
it's a seasonal generic greeting not really tied to any one religion.
That this actually has to be explained to Americans speaks volumes
about the widespread ignorance in this country.

As much as I despise Wal*mart, I have to say "kudos" to them for this.

Except, it seems they're only doing it because they lost money by being
boycotted by people who wanted them to say Merry Christmas.
If they get another boycott this year from the other side...and lose
*more* money than they'd lost from the previous boycott, who knows what
they'll try next year?
Having said that, I'm an atheist but I have no problem with someone
wishing me a Merry Christmas. I don't get all upset and go into a big
song and dance about my issues with organized religion with an
individual who clearly is just trying to be nice!!
But I know personally one woman - a woman who converted to Judaism -
who will make a federal case out of this if anyone dares say Merry
Christmas to her. Even if she's shopping for Christmas presents...
There's a lot of over-sensitive people in the world but it's judges,
lawyers and stupid juries who give them the power they have over the
rest of the populace.

Why not sincerity and profit? Perhaps they aren't mutually exclusive.
But I wonder about this. The other stores aren't doing this. Does not
KMart not care about profit?

Since for almost all of its history Walmart has said Merry Christmas and

immediate forceful bowel movement because of it. History does not favor your

Heavens! How the Jews will howl! But no one else will.

I don't suspect that this will bother most Jews. It will bother those
folks who style themselves "free thinkers".

I rather doubt it, since us free thinkers have always understood that a
business like Wal-Mart has the right to greet its customers with whatever
form they choose.

Unlike the religious right, who were the ones that made a big deal out of
this.

So shove your prediction in your piehole.

How long do you suppose it will be until some atheist will whine that
they feel threatened or offended by this? How long before the
boycotts?

gee, do you think the dreaded aclu will defend them, or will o lie lly
slander them first

Okay, do you think there's any legitimacy to a claim by a
supposed atheist that it harms him that a store puts up a "Merry
Christmas" sign?

I don't know, is there any legitimacy to a claim by a Christian
that it harms him that a store puts up a "Happy Holidays" sign?
I mean, I'm willing to consider either possibility, that it's
important which one a store uses, or that it's not. But if it
is important, that Christians have a valid reason to object
to a store using "Happy Holidays", then I'd think Jews and
atheists and so on have even more reason to object to
"Merry Christmas". Whereas if it's not important, then if a
store does use "Happy Holidays", the response should
be "Fine, whatever, it means the same thing".
What I don't get is if the same people who think that the
use of "Happy Holidays" is political correctness run wild
and an attack on Christmas also think that Jews and
atheists and so on are getting worked up over nothing if
they object to "Merry Christmas".

This whole stupid thing started because Bill O'Reilly didn't have anything
to say one day, so he saw a "Happy Holidays" sign and took off on it.
Consider the source of this non-flap.

Aside from the fact that you're conveniently ignoring that
saying "Merry Christmas" is an established tradition, while your
hypothetical sign is one man's opinion, yes, I would think there would
be legitimacy to that complaint. Why would anyone want to put up a
sign insisting there is "no God"?

BTW, what's with your "supposed atheist" self-righteous silliness?
Can't handle the idea that some people don't believe in an invisible

I've seen people argue that there is no God, and they always
come off sounding like they're trying to convince themselves. Like it
isn't really that they don't believe there is one, but that they don't
like it. Tough.
