I like Wal Mart. A single-serving Stouffer's lasagna that costs $3 at my
local Kash and Karry, costs $2.50 at WM. A bagged salad that costs $3 at
K&K also costs $2.50 at WM -- and the salad at WM is fresher.
Big can of Fosters: $2 at K&K, $1.70 at WM. 24-pack of Eggo waffles: over
$4 at K&K, around $3 at WM.

The argument being made by the Walmartyr's Brigade [And I'm not agreeing or
disagreeing, supporting or criticizing them - just presenting their
arguments] is that they engage in predatory practices.
They open up stores, operate them at a loss, drive the local competitors
out of business and then shut down the store forcing people to travel two
towns over to get to the nearest Walmart.
They are virulently anti-union. Though some may consider that a virtue
while others consider it a mortal sin.
They are very much a low wage / low benefit employer. Again some may see
this as virtue
They buy from the same overseas suppliers collectively branded as
'sweatshops'. Though in the area Amerkin retailing they are hardly alone in
doing so: Ask Kathy Lee Gifford, P. Diddy [or whatever the hell his name is
this week] Martha Stewart, JLo, every major retailer. etc. etc.
They unpatriotically, knowingly hire illegal aliens. [Mebbe Dubya and
company will brand them as terrorist sympathizers and 'detain' the Wal-Mart
clan in Guantanamo..... Nah!! too much to hope for]
Having said that I have never been in a Wal-Mart. Coincidentally enough
Wal-Mart is a hot topic in Guelph's municipal elections in 2 weeks. They
[Wal-Mart] have been trying for years to build on 40 acres in the north end
of Guelph. The city refuses to change the zoning of the land for Wal-Mart
and they've taken it to the Ontario Municipal Board- a sort of appeals court
for those who think they've been treated unfairly by municipal government.
I have to shake my head at how worked up people on both sides get over a
_freakin_ big box store.
I've decided to vote a straight anti-Wal-Mart ticket - Not because they're
anti-Wal-Mart but because they do seem to be the most reasonable of that
lowest form of politician - the munies. But I do like to annoy the ardent
Wal-Mart Stalwarts I work with by saying I'm voting against it.
I've had fun needling one of them who happens to be a bit of an
anti-immigrant bigot that if he does get his precious Wal-Mart here in the
'Royal City' We will be flooded with 'greazy', 'furrin', 'Messican'
'wetbacks' because of it.
I guess I just like irritating him

If you don't think that illegal immigrants from south of the (US) border
are not capable of destroying a community, you need to spend a little
time in a southern border state...

No need. I live in a southern Canadian border province and I see daily
evidence of those flaky, furrin, Amerkin, drybacks wreaking havoc on our
utopian social democratic nation.

Seems to me that you're stating a personal preference, which might not be
shared by every one of the millions of people who shop at Walmart each day.
I would suggest you avert your eyes from these items if you ever chance to
walk down a Walmart aisle where they are on display, thereby avoiding
upsetting your delicate sensibilities...

What an intelligent remark; it's right up there with the great quotes of
all time, fer shure... Seems to me like you're the one who's "differently
abled" with the aforementioned stick, since you pale at the sight of frozen
foods. Or perhaps it's the result of a childhood trauma? Do tell us...

Funny, about 70% of agricultural workers, those who do the grunt work of
picking strawberries and such, are illegal. Unions love to represent them
however, just ask the UFW or UFCW, and I haven't heard much about INS raids
on this countries ag industry. Think Wal-Mart is getting picked on?
Naaaaaah.

There are 2 ways (or more) of looking at this:
1: It demonstrates that what Bush & Fox were working on
before 9/11 is necessary and we need to make these workers legal
2: Wal-Mart is a greedy corporate pig contributing to
unemployment in the US and a $10,000 fine per worker is not going to
make their decision to hire illegal workes uneconomical.

Or,
3: having made no progress whatsoever on the 'War on Terror' on the US

families miserable, the need for the administration to do something to
make themselves appear effective before the election required
something splashy.

I see nothing "splashy" about going after illegal alien workers. On the
contrary, I see that as "enforcing the law". The fact that today's
liberals and Democrats are OPPOSED to enforcing our country's laws is the
remarkable thing here.
If liberals and Democrats LIKE the idea of tons and tons of illegal aliens
roaming freely all over America, then it is up to liberals and Democrats to
call for our current laws against illegal aliens to be eliminated. Those
liberals and Democrats may or may not be successful in that attempt to
eliminate those laws, however. And, in the meantime, the rest of America
(those who are not liberals or Democrats) will continue to cheer when our
nation's laws are enforced by this administration.

I agree. But, of course, I also think we should get rid of minimum-wage
laws.
Well, that's the way people seem to solve social problems; say one
thing, do another, and never look too closely. I guess, by the same
principle, since it's served humanity for ten thousand years, I
shouldn't advise we change it.

Isn't the law supposed to have some relationship to reality?
I suppose. Do you have evidence of this ever occurring? It's certainly a
novel thought.
[...]
Meanwhile, the bulk of manufacturing jobs for large corporations has
now been shipped overseas, not only quite legally but now with tax
incentives thanks to the Bushies; and the service industries,
including software, are in the beginning stages of the same transfer.
That's going to be more of a problem for Americans than not being able
to get a job cleaning the toilet at Walmart.
Actually I disagree. It used to be that all those high value jobs were
being lost to Japan. Haven't heard that strain of fear mongering for about a
decade. Now it's the Chinese. In 2013 it will be someone else. Yes the
erstwhile Asian tigers strive to move up the value chain. It used to be
memory chip production was high value. Now it's software. The US's real
exports are creation and innovation. It has always shipped overseas those
areas that become low value and in my mind it's not particlularly worrisome.
What is though is the thought of latter-day latifundia.
Rome transit from a Republic of small freehold farmer/soldiers who had a
stake in defending their state as it was their farms. In empire an
oligopolistic elite had vast estates manned by slaves with an urban rabble
bought off with bread and circuses by the establishment elite.
Fastforward to today and we can see from our windows vast corporate
concerns increasingly staffed by illegal aliens who - lacking the basic
judicial, occupational, civil, health and safety standards are - if not
outright slaves than at least a reasonable facsimile thereof. At the same
time a wealthy elite retreats behind gated communities while an urban rabble
is bought off with modern circuses - much more humane but the gladiators
still duel.
A latter day latifundia.
