War Is Peace
By Dan Froomkin
Yesterday marked three years of war in Iraq -- but not to President
Bush.
To Bush, it was "the third anniversary of the beginning of the
liberation of Iraq."
In fact, as Nedra Pickler noted for the Associated Press, Bush didn't
use the word "war" at all in his brief remarks .

To hear Bush tell it, what's going on in Iraq -- whatever it is -- is
fundamentally about progress, victory and peace.
"We are implementing a strategy that will lead to victory in Iraq," he
said.
"And a victory in Iraq will make this country more secure, and will
help lay the foundation of peace for generations to come."
Bush's avoidance of the word "war" in the context of Iraq is the rule,
not the exception. In the carefully chosen lexicon of White House
speeches, that particular word is almost exclusively reserved for the
"global war on terror."
So there is no war, except for the war that never ends, and we're
winning.
It's a little reminiscent of George Orwell's 1984, where the three
slogans of the ruling party were "War is Peace; Freedom is Slavery;
Ignorance is Strength."
Since the disclosures about Bush's warrantless domestic surveillance
program, Bush critics have been citing that other dominant slogan from
Orwell's book: "Big Brother is Watching You."
But there are plenty of potential Orwell analogies in Bush's use of
language, and his historical revisionism, as well.

You described the basic tenants of INGSOC. Whoever thought it would happen
here? Who would have ever though so many Americans would have been
delighted, and embraced it's inception as our new form of government from
people who tell them Socialism is bad? Whoever thought so many people who
claim they hate socialism would not recognize it when it hits the square in
the face?
A description of it from the book within the book to further elucidate your
post:
"Oligarchical Collectivism", stating that INGSOC "rejects and vilifies every
principle for which the Socialist movement originally stood, and it chooses
to do this in the name of Socialism".
Will they ever understand how they have been used?

and;
***** and George didn't want more oil from Iraq, they wanted less. I know
some of you, no matter what I write, insist that our President and his
Veep are on the hunt for more crude so you can cheaply fill your family
Hummer; that somehow, these two oil-patch babies are concerned that the
price of gas in the USA is bumping up to $3 a gallon.
Not so, gentle souls. Three bucks a gallon in the States (and a quid a
litre in Britain) means colossal profits for Big Oil, and that makes
*****'s ticker go pitty-pat with joy. The top oily-gopolists, the five
largest oil companies, pulled in $113 billion in profit in 2005 --
compared to a piddly $34 billion in 2002 before Operation Iraqi
Liberation. In other words, it's been a good war for Big Oil.
As per Plan Bush, Bahr Al-Ulum became Iraq's occupation oil minister;
the conquered nation "enhanced its relationship with OPEC;" and the
price of oil, from Clinton peace-time to Bush war-time, shot up 317%.
In other words, on the third anniversary of invasion, we can say the
attack and occupation is, indeed, a Mission Accomplished. However, it
wasn't America's mission, nor the Iraqis'. It was a Mission Accomplished
for OPEC and Big Oil.
