Peace a fitting memorial
By Lloyd Downs
What does it mean to support our troops?
World War II's ending brought troops home to ticker-tape parades,
lovely ladies waving their hankies at our heroes, and V-signs for
victory.
But what about wars since then?
It would seem the majority of wars since 1945 are political,
ideological, for protection of oil, or some other corporate market
share source.
Korea and Vietnam were wars of ideologies.
Neither seemed to end with an armistice treaty.
Now, "the Bush war." War was not the last thing the White House
wanted.
It was the first -- even prior to 9-11.
Was Saddam Hussein's assassination attempt on the president's daddy
the real cause, or one pretense out of 27 offered for war in Iraq?
Echoes of support for our troops cry out across the nation, but how
does the United States really treat its soldiers, and veterans?
The president suspended health care benefits for 200,000 vets.
Now, more budget cuts from vets' health care, prescription drugs and
nursing homes.
Soon we will have a tsunami wave of vets coming home with mental
damage from what 70 attacks daily can do to a human.
Veterans represent 23 percent of our homeless.
