Ford farewelled by faithful few
WASHINGTON: George W. Bush sent his apologies - he was too busy
cutting wood and riding his bike - and almost 500 of the 535 members of
Congress also had more pressing engagements, as the state funeral for
Gerald Ford, the 38th president of the US, was held in Washington
yesterday.
While Ford's widow, Betty, was joined by Vice-President ***** Cheney in
the Capitol Rotunda, most members of the political establishment were
notable for their absence.
Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and his deputy, Richard Durbin, opted
to continue with a visit to Inca ruins in South America. Incoming house
speaker Nancy Pelosi pardoned herself, and six of the nine members of
the Supreme Court, including John Paul Stevens, who was appointed by
Ford, were nowhere to be seen.
(snip)
The American people were also slow to respond. Police had erected
barricades to keep the expected thousands at bay, but by mid-afternoon
only 20 people were waiting outside Capitol Hill to view the casket.

If he wanted a better turnout he should have died at a more convenient
time. :)
Many people are on vacation right now and didn't feel like attending,
I'm sure many
of them watched on TV however.

Oh well. He is an afterthought in American politics...a president
sandwiched inbetween 2 scumbags in Nixon and Carter. It is not an
enviable place to be. IOW, who cares?

There at least three funeral ceremonies. A politician need not attend
all three. Ford did not attend any of them. He won't be offended if
you don't show up. He is dead. Showing up is purely for show, a
ceremonial duty.
The superstitions Americans have about corpses is baffling -- like
some primitive African tribe. You treat them with more respect than
living beings. You care more if a corpse is chopped up or burned than
if a living person is.

: ) True.
The British have the same fascination with murder victims.
If someone is simply shot it's not that big a deal, but if they are shot and
then the body is cut up and stuffed into sacks to hide it or something, the
press go apeshit.
What's the difference - they're just as dead.

True - but if the only way to get a body out of an apartment is a bit at a
time in a shopping bag it doesn't mean the murderer is some kind of
butchering psychopath - it just means he was in a bit of a bind and probably
quite sensible.

Which, among violent criminals, makes him unique enough to make the news.
That, and not being quite sensible enough to avoid getting caught.

The memorial is Tuesday.
Funeral for family and friends, memorial for the country. Keep it straight.
Nancy Reagan arranged a huge funeral bash for Ronnie, Betty Ford arranged a
simple family and friends funeral for Jerry.
Respect Betty Ford's wishes.... she has a somewhat different outlook on the
meaning of funerals than did nancy reagan.

Given the caliber of American presidents over the last 45 years or so,
I'm surprised anybody shows up for their funerals. I have more respect
for the man who ran my corner grocery store for 40 years.

he was NOT a neocon. Ford wouldn't have a prayer in a GOP primary

Har, even Bush and Rumsfeld couldn't be bothered to greet Betty Ford at the
airport on Friday night.
It was Ford's own '70s Republicans who were conspicuously absent -- not
those (reading between your lines) "niggers & *****-loving Democrats" you
