(Roxbury-AP, Aug. 22, 2005 6:35 AM) _ Pulitzer-prize winning
journalist Carl Bernstein says anonymous sources are vital
for today's journalists, particularly when covering national
politics.
The former Washington Post reporter says that most significant
truth-telling is anonymous because it can cost people their jobs.
Bernstein also says that every source deserves a reporter's
protection as long as the source keeps his end of the bargain
and does not give up information to a serious crime,
such as murder.
Bernstein was in Roxbury yesterday meeting with major donors
of The Federation, Jewish Communities of Western Connecticut.
Bernstein and Bob Woodward teamed together to cover the 1972
Watergate hotel break-in at the Democratic campaign headquarters.
Using an anonymous source they called "Deep Throat," their
investigation triggered President Nixon's resignation.
Bernstein and Woodward protected Deep Throat's identity until
this year, when former FBI Associate Director Mark Felt identified
himself as the mysterious source.
