"The enjoyment of power inevitably corrupts the judgment of reason, and =
perverts its liberty." --Immanuel Kant=20
"Political scientists almost everywhere have promoted the expansion of =
government power. They have functioned as the clergy of oppression." =
--Rudolph Rummel=20
"Night brings our troubles to the light, rather than banishes them." =
--Seneca=20
"Courage is resistance to fear, master of fear -- not absence of fear. =
Except a creature be part coward, it is not a compliment to say it is =
brave." --Mark Twain=20
"The Jews and Arabs should settle their dispute in the true spirit of =
Christian charity." --Alexander Wiley=20

UPRIGHT
"Senator Kerry talked of reducing terrorism to -- quote -- nuisance -- =
end quote; and compared it to prostitution and illegal gambling. I =
couldn't disagree more. Our goal is not to reduce terror to some =
acceptable level of nuisance. Our goal is to defeat terror by staying on =
the offensive, destroying terrorists and spreading freedom and liberty =
around the world." --President George W. Bush=20
"When pro-Kerry commentators solemnly pronounce Debate Round 2 to have =
been 'a draw' -- you know George Bush won that round."--William Safire=20
"Congratulations to the people of Afghanistan, who have just held the =
first free election in their history. As in Australia, the Afghan =
election was a defeat for al-Qa'ida -- in this case simply by virtue of =
taking place." --James Taranto=20
"Whether you're talking about an assembly line worker or the chairman of =
the board, attendance records like Senators Edwards' and Kerry's would =
get anyone else fired. ... Based on their records, neither John Kerry =
nor John Edwards deserves a job promotion." --Linda Chavez=20
"[I]s it too much to hope that campaign trail accusations bear some =
resemblance to the facts?" --Paul Jacob=20
"I have been involved in the war on terrorism for two decades, and in my =
view no world leader has better understood the stakes in this global war =
than President Bush. Mr. Kerry is free to quote my comments about Iraq. =
But for the sake of honesty he should also point out that I have =
repeatedly said, including in all my speeches in recent weeks, that =
President Bush made a correct and courageous decision to liberate Iraq =
from Saddam Hussein's brutality, and that the president is correct to =
see the war in Iraq as a central front in the war on terrorism." --Paul =
Bremer=20

EDITORIAL EXEGESIS
"A genuine democratic election in war-torn and historically undemocratic =
Afghanistan is monumental by any account. Early reports indicated some =
irregularities, but by yesterday morning, monitors from the United =
Nations and the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe were =
defending the overall integrity of the election. Taliban insurgents =
promised attacks to disrupt the voting but were either thwarted by =
Coalition and Afghan security forces or had already been rendered =
incapable of doing much harm. Where once democracy was a distant idea, =
now it is a reality. The results won't be in for two to three weeks -- =
the ballots haven't even begun to be counted -- but in a country where =
electricity is scarce and ballot boxes travel by donkey, that's to be =
expected. President Bush said it all this weekend when he pointed out =
that in Afghanistan, 'Just three years ago, women were being executed in =
the sports stadium. Today they're voting for a leader of a free =
country.' Credit goes first to the voters of Afghanistan who braved the =
Taliban's repeated threats not to vote. Where before Afghans were =
subjects, now they are an electorate. Credit should also go to Afghan =
electoral officials and security forces, who administered an election =
for the first time and kept order despite continued lawlessness in much =
of the country. Credit also goes to the Coalition forces who routed the =
Taliban regime, and now guard a fragile and emerging democracy where an =
abusive theocracy once stood. And of course credit goes to Mr. Bush, =
whose determination in the weeks after the September 11th attacks to =
remove the Taliban made Afghan democracy a possibility in the first =
place." --The Washington Times
