Baghdad suicide bombing death toll likely to rise
Officials expect the death toll from a powerful overnight suicide bombing in
Baghdad to rise further.
At least 25 people were killed and about 130 injured when a pick-up truck
exploded outside the US-led coalition's fortified compound in the Iraqi
capital.
At least two of the dead are believed to be American contractors, but most
of those killed were Iraqi workers for the coalition.
The pick-up truck packed with about 500 kilograms of explosives blew up at
the main entrance to the headquarters, known as the Assassin's Gate.
It has been described as one of the city's deadliest attack's since the end
of the war in Iraq was declared in May last year and the first car bomb
since a New Year's Eve attack on a popular restaurant.
A spokesman for the Iraqi Governing Council, Hamid al-Kifaaeh, says the
attack will not deter the mission to stabilise Iraq.
"This criminal act is another stain on Saddam's regime and his terrorist
allies, be they local or foreign," he said.
"We will not shirk from our responsibility nor from our pledges to the Iraqi
people in the face of such terrorism. The terrorists will never succeed."
