We must bring back the 55 MPH SPEED LIMIT |
These soaring gas prices make it a 2 + 2 is 4. We simply have to cut
back on consumption. And the 55 would also save thousands of lives a
year just like it did in the 70s. And violators should lose their
license.

Not unless it was a land yacht with a ridiculously oversized, overpowered
engine. I used to drive a Chevy Belair with a 300hp engine that got 25 MPG
on the highway at 55mph. Guess what kind of MPG it got at 80mph? Yeah,
there's a huge difference.
Drag increases as the cube of air velocity over the vehicle. The faster you
go, exponentially more power output is required. 55mph is a sweet-spot for
highway MPG performance (though that could perhaps be tweaked upward a bit
for newer cars...)

Yeah, and since 55 mph speed limit was universally ignored, it really saved
plenty of gas...

No, those little Japanese cars really didn't go much over 55.

unenforceable from Day One.

You're a liar. Lots of people loved it cause it saved both gas and
thousands of lives every year and prevented tens of thousands of
injuries and saved billions of $ that would have been lost in property
damage and medical bills. Lower speed limits are the most obvious
thing in the world.

The previous posted is not lying. His observation is simple truth.
Enforcing a 55mph speed limit was hard to enforce because there was nearly a
universal violation of it.
If you are one of the folks who stayed within the 55 mph limit, then you are
probably one of the folks who caused an accident
by going sliower than the vast majority of motorists on the raod.
"Lots of people," is not a majority. What you call "lots of people" was and
still is, a minority.
The people who support a 55 mph limit are people who don't drive, probably,
or seniors who do 45 mph in the left hand lane, (who shouldn't be driving
anyway), or people who drive very short distances.
Any one - probably 98% of any one who regularly drive long distances whould
disagree with you.

If you feel that driving 55 mph will conserve fuel, p;ease feel free to do so.
You do not have to wait on a law to force you to do so. In the meantime, please
do not force the rest of us to drive the way you think we ought to.

With the aerodynamic streamlining of today's cars reducing their wind
resistance, the saving from driving 55 mph would be less than it was in
the 1970s--even for those few drivers who bothered to obey the speed limit.
