Unlike 3rd world countries, we have an established, stable government, a
still-functioning (barely) system of checks and balances and more money
than God. Still the travesty of Hurricane Katrina occured, as we all
watched in horrified disbelief.
Bush took office on the promise that he wold keep America safe. In
fulfillment of that promise, he effectively undermined FEMA, making it a
resting ground for political appointees, muddling chains of authority
and cutting its budget.
It's time for an accounting, to ensure that this horror is not
re-enacted with the next disaster. What is needed here is an
independent investigation conducted by an impartial bipartisan
commission modeled after the 9/11 commission.
