Object: We should never fear ideas or diplomacy
Few politicians, including Hillary Clinton, stood along with Barack
Obama's insistence that we should engage anyone in discussions to
problems, but Obama was right. We should never fear or deny others
the right to a sincere voice at the table, whether we agree with them
or not. In a similar vein, the President of Iran should be allowed to
speak his mind.
We need to return to being a nation of ideals, rather than thuggery.

How do you deal with a diplomat who is insane?
Someone who denies that the American Civil War never happened?
Or someone who says the Holocaust in WWII did not happen?
Or that, as a diplomat, support large numbers of fanatics with signs
"Destroy America"? Or "Israel will cease to exist"?
Talk about thuggery!

He didn't say the Holocaust didn't happen, did he?
He did say that the Palestinians shouldn't have to pay for a crime committed
by European Christians.

It was also actually Khomeini who first said "this regime occupying
Jerusalem will vanish from the pages of time" way back in the 1980's when
Isreal was selling Iran arms.
No-one seemed to even notice back then but when Ahmadinejad quotes Khomeini
20 years later it gets translated (completely out of context too) as 'Israel
must be wiped off the map" and this lie is repeated ad nauseum by the right
wing media.
So which country is the *****-stirrer here? And more importantly WHY?
Oh wait - Iran have got huge oil reserves too.
I can't believe the same people fall for the same lies all over again.
I bet the same kneejerk ignorant suckers believe the "Iran is developing
high grade uranium" lie too.
Ahmadinejad, IMO, is a homophobic total little *****, but that's not the
point. The west is supposed to be better than them. Why do we have to lie
ALL the time. It always backfires because the truth is out there.

Actually, the worst thing about the President of Iran is that
haircut... don't they have any good barbers in that country?! But,
regardless, he still is the president of Iran, which is a nation that
is relevent in certain situations in international affairs. His
opinions are also therefore relevent. Of course, in discussions, it
can be pointed out that there are facts that dispute his contentions,
and that his hubris is not conducive to good relations. We, as a
nation of ideals, should not fear ideas or diplomacy.
I could make very convincing arguments that he less of a thug than
George Bush, of course, but that would detract from the point of this
thread.

Your right, freedom of speech means just that, freedom of speech. The
more you try to constrain freedom of speech the more you will find
that the bad speech will succeed. The harder you have to work for an
idea, the more likely you will accept it.
If you really look at Nazism or Fascistism the more likely you are to
laugh at it. Make it hard to get to and people will accept it. The
more you try to control freedom the less freedom you have.
