Welcome to the New World Order

I am an American, born in the USA. I live closer to the totalitarian =
tyrant Fidel Castro than I do to my state capital. I live closer to the =
growing dictatorship of Hugo Chavez than I do to Washington, D.C. I live =
closer to the unrest in Central America than I do to the Statue of =
Liberty. And beyond these, just beyond them, lies a continent in =
turmoil, waiting to spill over into my living room.=20
I am virtually closer to Latin America than to Anglo America (if such a =
place still exists). I hear about the occurrence of atrocities on a =
daily basis; real atrocities taking place just beyond the horizon, not =
the complaints of my fellow citizens the majority of who cannot seem to =
imagine what trouble really means.=20
In the USA, we talk in glorious tones of such wonders as civil rights, =
always referring to the immortal words of our Declaration of =
Independence ("all men are created equal") and repeating the old cliche =
("America is the greatest country in the world!"). But we have something =
else to say when it comes to the rights of the world's oppressed - =
falling back on the handy concept of America looking out for its own =
interests. (Don't you think it's about time that we removed the plaque =
from the base of the Statue of Liberty? After all, it does tell the =
world to send us its poor and huddled masses, yearning to breathe free.)
We talk of America's interests as though these were not the interests of =
the hemisphere in which we live or of the entire world. The interests of =
America may for some refer basically to financial matters, as America's =
enemies are fond of suggesting. There is not a thing wrong with looking =
out for ones financial interests. The opposite, in fact, is what lands =
too many in poverty. The interests of America, however, are and must =
remain greater than those of a financial nature.=20
The existence of our free country cannot go on indefinitely unless we =
take more seriously the spread of tyranny in the world. America's =
interests are inextricably linked with the well-being of that of the =
world, moreso as time passes. As time goes by, the enemies of freedom =
expand their sphere of power and enslave a greater portion of humanity. =
Who will be our ally, once all others have fallen under the control of =
totalitarianism?=20
Currently, 2 billion of the world's population sweat under the bonds of =
dictatorship. More than 1,500 Chinese have been murdered with official =
approval since 1999, just for belonging to the religious faith called =
Falun Gong; more than 100,000 have been imprisoned since then for that =
reason. Yet we continue to give China preferred-nation status in trade =
matters. This is outrageous and immoral, by any standard.
We have a strange society in the USA. We are confused, it seems. On some =
level, we know that having more does not lead to greater happiness, yet =
we want more, strive to get more, and often live less well as a result. =
We want so much to win at everything, that we are willing to lose to do =
it. We know that human rights are the property of all people who respect =
human rights, yet we often look away from the abuses taking place around =
us when to address them might be costly. We care so much about our =
fellow man, but we are too busy having fun to write a letter on his =
behalf, when he is being beaten down.=20
If we do not grow up and realize that we have a responsibility in the =
world, the rest of the free world will disappear while we are watching =
CNN...but CNN won't report it until after it has taken place. The United =
Nations will take over our entire society, but we won't be informed =
until we receive a letter from the UN, welcoming us as new citizens of =
the United Nations, subject to all the laws and regulations "explained =
in the enclosed booklet. If you have any complaints, keep them to =
yourself." (If you think I am exaggerating, take a look at your future =
as programmed by the UN; see the UN website - and tremble...it's =
affordable.)
