What America Needs Are MORE "Guest Workers" |
Are farm workers scared off by immigration law?
Sunday, 30 July 2006
Hazelton PA
The farm has long hired dozens of migrant laborers to bring in the
crop. But this year's different. One local grower won't go on the
record with his feelings out of fear that he might lose even the few
workers he's been able to sign on so far this growing season. And
he's afraid that laws like Hazleton's Illegal Immigration Relief
Act is responsible. The laws' backlash is spooking away immigrants
who've previously worked as farm laborers, he believes.
Farm Bureau officials believe Pennsylvania fruit and vegetable growers
"face production losses between $97 million and $175 million annually
without guest workers to help them tend to and harvest their crops."
"Last year, this vegetable grower suffered a major economic loss as a
result of drought. This year, he is already suffering a more
devastating loss because his crops are literally rotting in the field.
"This college-educated young farmer with a family may be able to lose
money for a few days or even a few weeks. But if he is unable to find a
supply of labor for the remainder of the harvest season, the future of
his farm enterprise will be very bleak."

What America needs is a "guest president". I can think of two Samoans and a
retarded Bolivian who'd do a better job.

Well...
He thinks wrong.
The fact of the matter (as anyone who deals with the real world could
verify) is that the illegals have swarmed into semi-skilled and skilled
trades such as construction. And so they have displaced american
citizens from decent paying legal jobs.
Picking berries and pulling turnips is too tedious for their illegal
selves to be bothered with anymore. And so the trend continues..
corrupting business pay scales as they move up the ladder.
PS:
There will be no illegal immigration bill before the election. The
recess to take the 'issue to the american people' is just another
dog-and-pony show; cynically used to drag the discussion out until it
is too late to do anything about it.
And after the election..? hah..
The best that can be done is to vote for any legislator who
specifically promises to enforce border security. period.
