the Senate, there is only one thing that Democrats can do, and they are
doing it now.
Democrats are working to take back the House and the Senate in November,
so that a proper Congressinal investigation can be mounted into just who
and when and why Republican energy and Middle East policies combined to
cause the simultaneous doubling of oil prices and international oil
companies gouging out the highest corporate profits in world history,
while plunging our nation into the deepest debt it has ever known, and
into a foolish quagmire of a war rivaling Vietnam in uselessness.
That's step one.

Oil prices are caused by demand exceeding supply.
No matter what sort of tantrum you throw, the supply of oil is
diminishing. It will be all gone in another 30 years. As is dwindles

1. reduce demand. You do this with more fuel efficiency, better
insulation, public transport, high tech heating/cooling, use of heat
pumps etc. You have to give people low interest loans to improve
their energy efficiency. You have to severely penalise those who
deliberately waste energy.
2. get on with alternative sources of energy. This means military
budget size program to convert the entire economy to work without oil.
Bush is doing the exact OPPOSITE of those two measures. He has also
temporarily reduced supply of oil by starting wars in two oil
producing regions and threatening to nuke a third.

MEANWHILE though, you'd think they could at LEAST offer
some good IDEAS ... for the good of the country and all
that stuff. Haven't heard any beyond "Bend-over for our
arab superiors" for years now. Of course half the Dems
are eco-nazis and WANT the price of gasoline to rise up
around $12/gal so some of their precious 'alternatives'
may (repeat "may") FINALLY be competitive. They WANT to
see America spanked for our 'sins' around the world.
This again assumes that everyone else is 'better' than
we are. Just WAIT until they see how China and India
start exploiting everybody ...

Republicans control the HOUSE the SENATE and the PRESIDENCY. What
exactly would you suggest they do since they are not even allow to get
anything out of committe for people to vote on.
And if they did have control what they should do is what another poster
suggested - change the tax on gas and oil to be a percentage of the
cost so that when gas prices went up the government was at least
getting more revenue to help develop alternative energy sources (which
Ronnie Reagan gutted by the by - said the private sector should be the
ones to research this issue - we can see how well that has paid out).
Once we harness wind, tide, sun power we are no longer dependent on the
middle east and the whims of the market (and Halliburton type
companies). And in any case we are still paying far less then they are
in the rest of the world for oil and gas and we are paying far less
than we have in the past when you account for inflation so just stop
whining!
