What are we to make of the Iraq !torture" pictures? |
I have delayed saying or posting anything relating to the
torture stories until the fog cleared a bit. It has not really done
so, so how are we to judge the allegations?
Anyone who has lived near a British army barracks - I did so when
living in Woolwich - will know the British army still contains a
healthy element of "brutal and licentious soldiery". In addition, I
doubt whether one can find an example of an occupation which was being
actively resisted where the soldiers have not misbehaved in this way.
It is probable that British soldiers have misbehaved in Iraq, whether
or not the Mirror pictures are authentic, simply because some soldiers
in such a situation will always do so. Being shot at and abused day
after day, seeing your mates killed and injured, inevitably produces
anger and contempt for the occupied population. However, as always
with human behaviour, it is a question of degree. I am willing to
believe until the contrary is show that British soldiers are generally
more restrained than most, probably all, foreign armies. RH
