What happened to all those "support our troops" flag-wavers? |
Remember all those so-called "support the troops" rallies that took
place before the invasion of Iraq?
The ones where all those chickenhawk conservatives were "supporting
the troops" by insisting that they should be shipped off to die in a
Middle Eastern hell-hole - all because George W. Bush convinced
America that we were about to be blown up by Saddam's apparently
non-existent weapons of mass destruction?
I often wonder where those people are now - I mean, you don't see a
lot of them around.
Waving flags, parading in the streets, "supporting the troops" - or
was that only when we were confronted with the exciting opportunity to
kill lots of brown people?
Yup, they've been remarkably silent recently, these "supporters" of
the troops.
It's a shame really, because the troops could probably do with a bit
of extra support right now.
Take, for example, the wounded soldiers who have to pay for meals
while they're in the hospital.
Last week it was revealed that the Pentagon is literally adding insult
to injury by charging soldiers who were wounded in Iraq for meals they
ate while recuperating.
Some soldiers are having to write checks for up to $300 to cover the
cost of their food.
Odd really - George W. Bush just asked the American people for another
$87 billion to foot the bill for his Iraq folly, meanwhile the
Pentagon is trying to squeeze an extra dollar here and there from
soldiers who were wounded in action.
Still, I suppose in a time of war everyone has to make sacrifices.
Everyone except Bush's super-rich friends of course, who just get an
enormous tax cut.

A lot of them disappeared when the soldiers let the Yellow Cake Uranium go
unprotected.
Then some more disappeared with each soldier who fired into a crowd of
civillians.
Some more disappeared when the pictures of the little boy who "lost" his
arms and legs made the rounds.
A few more were removed when it turned out that Saddam was actually an
*enemy* of al Quaeda - not a sponsor.
Then, when it was shown that Iraq didn't have any WMD, some more were
removed.
After Bush announced "Mission Accomplished", and the killing continued, more
disappeared.
Now - you mostly just find them at Gun Clubs and Fooball games - and VFW
posts.

There is a guy that drive around town in his truck. He has a Support The
Troops sticker and a "War Is Not The Answer" sticker. But he has cut out the
word "Not"
I pulled up next to him and our windows were down. So I leaned over and
flashed the "peace" sign and said "Yeah! War Is Not The Answer!" He said "I
took out the word not you *****." "Oh really," I said, "Maybe I should
take something out too," and I put down my index finger. I then invited him
to go inlist.

Here's a cheerful little earful from Fred:

I've always felt that anyone driving around in one of those huge gas-
guzzling SUVs or pickup trucks with a tiny American flag sticker on their
windows is, quite literally, doing the very least they can do.

Yes, credit where it's due and good one, Fred!
Of course, depending on where you are (say, Texas or some other redneck
hellhole) you could get shot just for practicing your First Amendment
