What has Bush accomplished by invading Iraq? |
Bush Sees Iraq Heading Toward Difficult, Chaotic Days
Mon May 24, 2004
CARLISLE, Pa. (Reuters) - President Bush said on Monday that Iraq faced a
critical time likely to be marked by increasing violence as it moved toward
self-rule.
In a prime-time speech billed by the White House as a major address, Bush
said the U.S.-led coalition in Iraq was strong, focused and unrelenting in
its bid to foster progress and reform in Iraq.
"Iraq now faces a critical moment. As the Iraqi people move closer to
governing themselves, the terrorists are likely to become more active and
more brutal. There are difficult days ahead, and the way forward may
sometimes appear chaotic," the president said in a speech at the U.S. Army
War College.

"I find it outrageous that the president is running for re-election on the
grounds that he's done such great things about terrorism. He ignored it. He
ignored terrorism for months, when maybe we could have done something to
stop 9/11," Clarke told CBS.

"From the brief time that we did spend occupying Iraqi territory
after the war, I am certain that had we taken all of Iraq, we would
have been like the dinosaur in the tar pit - we would still be there,
and we, not the United Nations, would be bearing the costs of
the occupation. This is a burden I am sure the beleaguered
American taxpayer would not have been happy to take on."
- Norman Schwarzkopf, from his 1993 autobiography, "It Doesn't
Take a Hero."
