What History Says About the Iraq War |
"Modern life in Western countries has also become so privileged and protected
that it is hard to convince affluent suburbanites that shooting and bombing your
way to power remains a norm in much of the world. Wealthy moderns too often
imagine that issues of governance, religion, and tribal affiliation are solved
through talk shows, lawsuits, or "60 Minutes" reports. Mostly, though, these
conflicts abroad continue to be settled through violence."

Armed Neocon agression is the answer to all our problems. Once we get rid
of the UN, we can answer all disputes with war and consequently give the
defence industry all the money it needs to make a tidy profit to protect
western freedom. Our children must be prepared to die for our agression
because we're too old to fight. Perpetual war is the answer to all our
problems because when at war, we can crush civil rights and silence dissent
at home.

Actually you have described how freedom * is * won ...so you can be alive to be
critical. That's what we did in WW2.
In that war we invented extraordinary things that you now use every day and
couldn't do without. And yes, the defence industry got so far ahead in
technology that they can now bomb a house without having to bomb a city. And
yes, they have to make money out of it to pay wages to the clever people who
think things up.
Our children will always be called upon to defend what we have because there are
people who want to take what we have away from us. If you don't know that then
there is no hope for you at all.
Perpetual war is the safest way to look at life because all other views fail
miserably. Imagine Jimmy Carter being all caring and apologetic after those
two towers were brought down. He would have sent food aid to Afghanistan and
asked Bin Laden to please stop attacking America. Stop thinking like a child
upset and see life as it is. Men are aggressive, greedy and territorial and
will remain so. Just be prepared to fight to win ... instead of wishing men
were all philosophers.

True, but we don't have the intelligence, in both senses of the word,
to bomb the right house. We don't even have the intelligence to
understand that bombing houses or cities usually makes the problem
worse. Some patient detective work in Afghanistan would have served up
Osama Bin Laden. A rational response to Saddam Hussein would have
prevented the country becoming a paradise for Muslim terrorists and
may have persuaded the Iranians that they did not need nuclear
weapons.
