Acutally about 1992 I sat in on this polling thingy, they'd have 1 or 2
people sit down at a time to watch new TV commercials (before they
aired) to get people's reactions. They also showed some news clips. One
was Chonnie Chung saying UFOs were real. Another was Dan Rather saying
the US Constitution had been abolished. This was right after Clinton got
elected and before he started all the crap against gun owners. Go
figure.

In case you might be interested, a writer by the name of Harry
Turtledove, posits something close to that.
He wrote a triligy imagining that alliens landed in large numbers and
with superior fire power in the middle of the second world war. The
books are still widely available and you might enjoy them.
