The June payroll jobs report did not receive much attention due to the
July 4 holiday, but the depressing 21st century job performance of the
US economy continues unabated.
o Only 144,000 private sector jobs were created, each one of which was
in domestic services.
o 56,000 jobs were created in professional and business services,
about half of which are in administrative and waste services.
o 38,000 jobs were created in education and health services, almost
all of which are in health care and social assistance.
o 19,000 jobs were created in leisure and hospitality, almost all of
which are waitresses and bartenders.
o Membership associations and organizations created 10,000 jobs and
repair and maintenance created 4,000 jobs.
o Financial activities created 16,000 jobs.
This most certainly is not the labor market profile of a first world
country, much less a superpower.
Where are the jobs for this year's crop of engineering and science
graduates?
US manufacturing lost another 24,000 jobs in June.
A country that doesn't manufacture doesn't need many engineers.
And the few engineering jobs available go to foreigners.
Readers have sent me employment listings from US software development
firms.
The listings are discriminatory against American citizens.
One ad from a company in New Jersey that is a developer for many
companies, including Oracle, specifies that the applicant must have a
TN visa.
A TN or Trade Nafta visa is what is given to Mexicans and Canadians,
who are willing to work in the US at below prevailing wages.
Another ad from a software consulting company based in Omaha,
Nebraska, specifies it wants software engineers who are H-1B
transferees.
What this means is that the firm is advertising for foreigners already
in the US who have H-1B work visas.
The reason the US firms specify that they have employment
opportunities only for foreigners who hold work visas is because the
foreigners will work for less than the prevailing US salary.
Gentle reader, when you read allegations that there is a shortage of

begining their take over of America with Unical and Maytag. If they don't
succeed there, there are other opportunities on the horizon. How about
the American automobile industry? Is it up for grabs yet? How many
companies out there are fronts for the Chinese, I wonder? Oh well. Who

operations and move them to China. That's more than 20,000 U.S.
manufacturing and high-tech jobs that will be lost.

For the past months, economists have been wondering why China just keeps
letting the its U.S. balance of payments get more and more lopsided.
Now it is becoming clear. China is launching a game of Go. The prize is
control of mideast oil. The recent bid by CNOOC for Unocal, which has
large reserves in and near Iraq, is the opening salvo. Then, mere days
later, this:
"We demand that the U.S. Congress correct its mistaken ways of
politicizing economic and trade issues and stop interfering in the normal
commercial exchanges between enterprises of two countries."
Is nobody struck by the irony of China lecturing the U.S. Congress on
free markets?"
Is nobody impressed with China's ability to tank the U.S. economy simply
by calling its U.S. paper?
Now this:
"Meeting in the Kazakh capital of Astana, the Shanghai Cooperation
Organization (SCO) - which includes Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan,
Uzbekistan, China, and Russia - issued a joint statement saying the
active military phase of the Afghan operation was coming to an end and
calling on the US-led coalition to agree to a deadline for ending the
temporary use of bases and air space in member countries."
This could get ugly. The Shanghai Six couldn't be too enthusiastic about
permanent U.S. bases in Iraq either. For now, U.S. military efforts in
the mideast are not too antithetical to Chinese interests. But this will
change. Hear the sabres.
The current U.S. administration has not evidenced much ability to think
strategically -- just look at Iraq's internal state. Nor has it shown
much ability to act cooperatively -- check the current state of the
"coalition." Now what?

There have been cases of girls getting pregnant at age 8, so it still
