No peace for Bush
By Deborah E. Gauthier / News Staff Writer
We didn't know our enemy then, we don't know our enemy now, and the
outcome in Vietnam proved that to be a deadly situation for American
forces.
The statistics bear that out -- 54,249 killed; 153,329 seriously
wounded; 10,000 amputees; 2,400 POWs over 13 active years of war.
Of course, the number of dead and wounded in Iraq don't come close to
the number of dead and wounded in Vietnam -- not yet.
But the aim of Iraqi insurgents and the strength of their bombs is
getting better.
In the first 11 days of August, 32 American soldiers and marines died
in Iraq and Afghanistan, bringing the total number of American dead to
1,826 in just 2 1/2 years.
Most of the 1,826 now dead men and women share at least one common
denominator -- they died young -- just as most of the 54,249 men and
women who died in Vietnam over the 15 years of that conflict died
young.
Why did they die?
In all the years since the end of the Vietnam War, we've never been
given an answer to that question beyond "we were trying to prevent the
spread of communism."
Caught in the lie that Saddam Hussein had weapons of mass destruction
and was determined to use them against the United States, Bush
rewrites history with his reason for war -- we're keeping terrorists
away from American soil and bringing democracy to the Middle East.
In a recent address, Bush said the young men and women dying in Iraq
died for a "noble cause."
What "noble cause?"
Mrs. Sheehan wants to know, because from her end, and from the end of
more than 62 percent of the people in this country, there's nothing
"noble" about it and she doesn't want Bush using her son's death, and
the death of other sons and daughters, as a reason to continue the
war.
And please, don't confuse criticism of the war with a lack of
admiration and respect for the men and women fighting and dying in
Iraq.
The two are not related, though Bush would like us to think they are.
Disagree with the president, you're unamerican; criticize the war, and
you're criticizing those fighting it.
That's balderdash, pure and simple.
The president and his staff are masters at turning the tables, but
polls show we're finally wise to them.
Unfortunately, it's a few months too late.
He's got another three years in office, and can do a lot of damage in
three years.
It's no wonder Bush doesn't want a face-to-face with Cindy Sheehan,
though.
She doesn't just want an answer.
She wants him impeached, and she's slowly but surely gaining support
with an organization she co-founded -- Gold Star Mothers for Peace,
made up of other mothers who lost a child in Iraq; and Veterans for
Peace, made up of the very people who have fought in this war and
others.
Though Mrs. Sheehan is five or six miles away from the president's
ranch, he feels threatened.
And well he should.
Casey's mother may be arrested today for trespassing, leaving Bush
free to pass her campsite without even a fleeting face-to-face.
But the momentum is growing.

"Naturally the common people don't want war: Neither in Russia, nor in
England, nor for that matter in Germany. That is understood. But,
after all, it is the leaders of the country who determine the policy
and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it
is a democracy, or a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a
communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be
brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to
do is tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the peacemakers
for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works
the same in any country."

Luftwaffe Commander in Chief
