What the...I thought Cuba's "revolution" had given them first-ratemedical care?! |
(CNN) -- A Spanish surgeon has traveled to Havana to
consider what steps should be taken to halt the
deterioration of Cuban President Fidel Castro's health,
a Spanish newspaper reported Sunday.
Dr. Jose Luis Garcia Sabrido, chief of surgery at the
Spanish public hospital Gregorio Maranon de Madrid,
departed Thursday for Cuba aboard an airplane the Cuban
government chartered, El Periodico de Catalunya reported.
The Cuban Embassy in Spain oversaw all details of the
visit, the paper said.
http://edition.cnn.com/2006/WORLD/americas/12/24/castro.health/index.html
Hmm...apologists for the Cuban totalitarian state often
justify their praise by talking about the great strides
Cuba made in medical care and education. Looks as if
they've just made a few baby steps - El Caudillo seems
to need medical care from a market economy.
This reminds me of when the late Robert Bourassa, the
former Quebec premier, abandoned the the 'marvelous'
Canadian health care system and flew to the US for his
cancer treatment. What *is* it about socialized
medicine that the leaders of the places that have it
don't want to consume it?

Castro outlived all his political contemporaries.
He is 80 years old.
That could just as easily say something good about the Cuban health care
system as bad.

So what. My grandma lived to 81 and died in 1994. Does that mean
their healthcare system is typical of USA circa 1994?
Is the denial of freedom worth out-of-date healthcare quality?

Comparing Bush to Castro goes way too far, but
undeniably, with the (misnamed) "Patriot" Act and the
(fortunately) derailed "Patriot" Act II, as well as his
illegal wiretapping, detention of prisoners without
charge or access to counsel, and various other
measures, Bush has moved the US dangerously in a
totalitarian direction.

So what. My grandma lived to 81 and died in 1994. Does that mean
their healthcare system is typical of USA circa 1994?
Is the denial of freedom worth out-of-date healthcare quality?
Bush denies freedom and millions have to get their health care in ERs.
Whose freedom has been denied?
Pay attention. In all the papers.
Not an answer. You whiffed off.
I think that it's supposed to be self-evident that we live in a nazi

Misses the point of the post, bwannie-poo. The point
is, Castro's totalitarian regime can't produce high
quality medical care.

There is indeed only one point here: Castro had to
import medical services from a market economy because
his own wreck of a socialist/totalitarian one couldn't

The basic story originally cited, you twit. He flew in
a doctor from Spain because no doctor in Cuba was good
enough. Work your way back up the thread and read it;

Ah - now you're getting a *bit* nearer the truth.
"He flew in a Doctor from Spain" is correct. However you omit to point out
the Doctor was the cheif surgeon in Madrid and that Castro can afford the
very best. He's the *president* FFS.
The "no doctor in Cuba was good enough" is not really quite true now is it.
There are plenty of excelent surgeons in Cuba - maybe just not he best in
the world - and if you're a dictator you're going to get the best in the
world no matter which country he happes to be from.
Now can we see your cites and evidence for your claims that Cuba can't
produce high quality medical care because it's a 'wreck'
You could start by defining 'wreck' in this context and some evidence for
it.

Thanks for confirming everything I wrote, and more. If
Cuban medical care was any good, he wouldn't *need* to
fly in someone from Spain. His medical system is
primitive, even 47 years after the so-called "glorious
revolution." And how can you with a straight face
endorse Castro treating himself to "the best" when that
isn't available to virtually anyone else in Cuba,
except maybe his thug brother? Isn't Cuba supposed to
be an egalitarian society?
The important point is, Castro needed to import medical
care from a market economy into his "workers'
paradise", because his shitty socialist medical care
system was incapable of providing the care, period.

You're just being ridiculous now.
*Everybody* buys the best medical care they can afford - why would Castro be
any different?
If -say- President Kennedy had needed a heart transplant he would have flown
in the best heart surgeon in the world - which around about that time
happened to be Christian Barnard (sp?) - a South African. So if that
scenario had come about you would have been claiming that the USA health
service was a 'wreck' and that the arrival of Barnard proved it?
It's simply an absurd extrapolation.
Every report I've seen shows Cuba's health service to be very good, with one
of the highest Doctor/patient ratios in the world - the arrival of a top
Spanish surgery specialist doesn't prove otherwise.
You're raving hatespeech about Cuba is far more revealing.
Despite what you are clearly desparate to believe, the medical service *is*
available to all citizens.
snipped..
More anti-Castro drivel.
