Iraq Body Count Speaks
Iraq Body Count, an organization made up of peace activists and academics
has placed the number of Iraqi civilians killed in Iraq at 25,000, which is
likely the lowest estimate thus far by any group opposed to the Iraq War. I
am not attempting to diminish in any way the tragedy of the 25,000 civilian
deaths, but given that IBC is a peace-activist motivated organization, I
hope that those individuals spouting off about 100,000 civilian deaths will
now become politely silent.
The stats presented are interesting, but what is even more interesting is
the bizarre logic applied to some of the numbers generated:
The report claims that 37% of all civilian casualties were caused by
Coalition forces, and that most of these occurred during the invasion phase.
Given the complete chaos and governmental breakdown during and after the
invasion, it is incredible that any reasonable estimation could be made of
deaths during this period. Let's keep in mind, that general movement
throughout parts of Iraq is still dangerous and hospital staffs in these
areas are under constant threat of death if they cooperate with Iraqi or
Coalition forces. Indeed, scores of doctors have been killed for seemingly
cooperating with the coalition.
Insurgent activities are said to have caused 9% of civilian deaths, while
criminal activity has caused 36% of civilian deaths.
If only 9% of the deaths caused have been by terrorist actions, then who is
contributing to the carnage that is brought to us daily via the MSM. In
virtually every single report filed since the destruction of the Bathists,
the combatants involved are said to be insurgents. Are we to believe, that
what Reuters and AP are calling an insurgency, is actually common
criminality? Somebody has some explaining to do.
Fully 80% of civilian deaths are said to be men, not women or children.
Insurgent and criminal wounded who die in hospitals are dressed as civilians
without military paraphernalia. There are no uniforms, no armbands, no
tattoos; basically no way of determining whether the deceased are killed as
an innocent bystander or a combatant. Ad to this the fact that Iraqi
hospitals do not categorize deaths as insurgent or non-combatant. Then, add
to this the fact that coalition policy has generally been to not interfere
with or raid hospitals in search of wounded combatants. The fact that 80% of
civilian dead have been men, is incredibly suspect. Could it be, just maybe,
that a lot of these are fighters?
50% of civilian deaths were said to be caused by explosive devices, and a
disproportionate number of these were children, yet, children and women made
up only 20% of civilians killed. This claim, by BBC, should raise eyebrows.
It should be appreciated that IBC is attempting to put actual numbers to the
tragedy of civilian casualties. I'd be surprised though, that given the
organization's vehement anti-Americanism and passionate pacifist politics,
that the interpretations it derives won't be at least a tad suspect. But, no
matter what a person's politics, we should not lose sight of the fact many
of the dead in Iraq are innocents who want nothing but to live in peace.
For those who forget that the people of Iraq once lived under a charming
fellow named Saddam Hussein, I refer you to the following:

Sorry, they themselves say they only used news reports and the count
cannot be accurate. Nice try.
