Vice President: Spinning secrets
SEATTLE POST-INTELLIGENCER EDITORIAL BOARD
It's alarming to learn the extent to which the Bush administration
seemed willing to go to justify its decision to invade Iraq and spin
the intelligence on which the decision was based.
We already knew that someone in the administration outed Valerie Plame
as a covert CIA operative, likely in an effort to discredit her
husband, former U.S. Ambassador Joseph Wilson, after he challenged
President Bush's assertions about Iraq's efforts to buy uranium in
Niger.
Now we learn, according to documents filed by special prosecutor
Patrick Fitzgerald, about evidence that administration officials were
sharing contents of the then-classified National Intelligence Estimate
with reporters in the summer of 2003.
Involved in what would seem to be illegal disclosure of classified
information was Lewis "Scooter" Libby, then chief of staff to Vice
President ***** Cheney.
Libby reportedly says he was authorized by his "superiors" to share
the secret data with reporters, including The New York Times'
redoubtable Judith Miller.
How could Libby's "superiors" not include the vice president?
Reporters crave access and information.
But the most troubling aspect if the allegations are true is that the
administration, even the vice president himself, would authorize
disclosure -- and certainly selective disclosure -- of classified
information for the sake of selling the war.
If Cheney used the power of his office in such a way, resignation
would be an honorable course.
