Fox’s Right-Wing Alternative To Daily Show Fails
In January, Fox announced that it would begin airing the “Half Hour
News Hour” on Sunday nights, the so-called “right-wing answer to ‘The
Daily Show With Jon Stewart.‘”
http://www.metacritic.com/tv/shows/halfhournewshour
“You can turn on any show and see Bush being bashed,” said creator
Joel Surnow, producer of Fox’s 24.
“There really is nothing out there for those who want satire that
tilts right.”

As Fox has learned, that’s because no one wants to watch that kind of
satire.
TVNewser reports today that the HHNH has been canceled.
http://www.mediabistro.com/tvnewser/fnc/half_hour_news_hour_shelved_65085.asp?c=rss
In a memo to senior producers today, Fox News Corp.’s senior vice
president Bill Shine announced:
Joel Surnow and I have mutually decided that we will not continue the
Half Hour News Hour beyond its current 15 episode run.
The last show will be presented on September 16th.
Shine claimed the reason for the shelving of the show was that Fox is
“considering ways to retool the show for future scheduling needs.”
http://www.mediabistro.com/tvnewser/fnc/half_hour_news_hour_shelved_65085.asp?c=rss
He held out the chance that the show would air again:
“There is still a chance you will see the program at some point in the
future.”
The first show guest-starred right-wing all-stars Rush Limbaugh and
Ann Coulter as President and Vice President.
http://www.mediabistro.com/tvnewser/fnc/rush_tapes_intro_for_fncs_news_satire_50856.asp
The reviews for the program were consistently dismal.
Its very first review, from the Orlando Sentinel, decried the
“[l]aughter, of an awfully canned variety, greets all the gags.
Nothing happening on screen justifies these outbursts. … If we’re
lucky, we’ll never hear of this dreadful show again.”
http://blogs.orlandosentinel.com/entertainment_tv_tvblog/2007/02/fox_news_channe.html
“Sometimes the humor is so heavy-handed that it seems almost like
self-parody,” said the New York Times.
http://query.nytimes.com/gst/fullpage.html?res=9E07E0DA143EF934A25751C0A9619C8B63
“The 1/2 Hour News Hour is slow torture all by itself,” said the
Philadelpha Inquirer.
What the right-wing failed to grasp is Jon Stewart is funny not
because he spins falsehoods but because he tells the truth.

Of course it did. It wasn't even as funny as Mad TV, and I've never once
smiled watching that piece.

Actually, the producer of 24 was responsible for it. This shows you
what you get when a producer of a show about fighting terrorists and
the government, tries to do a comedy.
You get a comedy version of 24.

Harry, the grief is unbearable.
I actually did see the show once, and it really was awful. As you
know, there are people on the right who can be funny, such as PJ
O'Rourke or Rush Limbaugh. And Jon Stewart can be devastatingly funny
when Democrats ***** up, too. I'll be roaring with laughter and at the
same time be thinking, "gawd, I hope none of the right wingers were
watching this show".
But this show was utterly pathetic. It had the weird, stilted
off-kilter humor that you might see in a poorly translated comedy show
from another country. Using canned laughter was bad enough, but they
used it constantly every time someone said something. It would make
you cringe.
And, worst of all, it was utterly devoid of wit. It was tractor
humor--humor for propaganda, which is never a happy combination.

I wanted to experience it. I did. How'd it ever last beyond 1 showing?
Here's the sample I took with Rush and Anne

If you don't have a heart how can you experience human emotions? The
right detests the arts. That's evident from watching the above clip.
Humor is a foreign attibute amoungst the right.

“Sometimes the humor is so heavy-handed that it seems almost like
self-parody,” said the New York Times.

“The 1/2 Hour News Hour is slow torture all by itself,” said the
Philadelpha Inquirer.

What the right-wing failed to grasp is Jon Stewart is funny not
because he spins falsehoods but because he tells the truth.

It had the
weird, stilted
off-kilter humor that you might see in a poorly translated comedy show
from another country.

That's because humor requires an understanding of human nature.

It is like Hee Haw except there was no gratuitous cleavage to distract
from the obvious lack of wit.
