BAGHDAD, Iraq (CNN) -- The U.S. Army has ordered an investigation of the
deaths of four Iraqi civilians in Mahmoudiya, a town south of Baghdad, a
U.S. military statement said Friday.
The probe was ordered by Maj. Gen. James D. Thurman, commanding general of
Multinational Division-Baghdad.
He asked the Army's Criminal Investigation Command to investigate "an
incident in which soldiers allegedly killed a family of four Iraqi civilians
in their home," the statement said.
Last Friday, "two soldiers reported alleged coalition force involvement" in
the deaths, according to the statement.
"A preliminary inquiry conducted by MND-Baghdad found sufficient information
existed to recommend a criminal investigation into the incident," the
statement said.
The investigation began Saturday.
