Lee sheriff wants to take over child abuse inquiries

The Lee County Sheriff’s Office plans to take over child abuse and
neglect investigations if the state Legislature approves more funding
next session.
Sheriff Mike Scott has met with administrators from the District 8
office of the Department of Children and Families, which includes Lee
County, to discuss the possibility of taking on the investigations.
“With us right now it is purely, 100 percent, a matter of funding,”
Scott said. “There’s no question we’d do a better job.”
Six counties in Florida already contract with the DCF to do child abuse
and neglect investigations: Seminole, Broward, Hillsborough, Manatee,
Pasco and Pinellas.
DCF has been plagued with a track record of mishandling some of its
cases. Last year, for example, Michelle Fontanez of Lehigh Acres was
raped and killed after DCF investigators said she was safe to return
home. Her stepfather is charged with her murder.
“It’s becoming a trend in the state because of DCF’s dismal record,”
Scott said. “As a community, I think we owe victims the best possible
follow-up.”
Harry Propper, operations manager for District 8, which also includes
Charlotte, Collier, Glades and Hendry counties, said he began talking
with the sheriff’s office about the transition earlier this year.
“They are already a 24/7 operation, and they can leverage that operation
in the protection of children,” Propper said.

Imagine that, 6.4 children die at the hands of the very agencies that
are supposed to protect them and only 1.5 at the hands of parents per
100,000 children. CPS perpetrates more abuse, neglect, and sexual abuse
and kills more children then parents in the United States. If the
citizens of this country hold CPS to the same standards that they hold
parents too. No judge should ever put another child in the hands of ANY
government agency because CPS nationwide is guilty of more harm and
death than any human being combined. CPS nationwide is guilty of more
human rights violations and deaths of children then the homes from which
they were removed. When are the judges going to wake up and see that
they are sending children to their death and a life of abuse when
children are removed from safe homes based on the mere opinion of a
bunch of social workers.
