been a stable form of "currency" recognized for its in herent value
while paper money has not.

Nah. It isn't particularly stable. It's value can vary widely (and
wildly
in some circumstances). In "gold rush" towns, it could often have
extremely poor value.

Put it this way, if you were in the desert
without food and water for a week and came across a lemonaid stand and
had a fist full of U.S. dollars or a bag of gold, guess which one the
vendor will probably take? Or look at it this way - say there is a
complete collapse of the U.S. dollar. When you need food or other
supplies your dollars are going to get you nothing. But, a bit of
gold will. Gold has stood the test of time and recognized for it's
value in just about all four corners of the globe.-

Actually, what you are all talking about is not its "inherent
value"
nor stability. It is its convertibility. Paper money cannot be
physically
converted into other paper money, or really any product worth anything
close to what is printed on the face. Gold, on the other hand can be
converted into coin, or really any other physical use for gold and
retain
some significant value of its original form. That, incombination with
it's relative scaricity (which protects its value) allows it to then
also
be physically very portable. (There are alot of metals which can
be converted, but since their available volume is so large, it makes
it difficult to use them as physical money). Gold has one other nice
feature that makes it very useful for storage of value. It doesn't
corrode, and in fact doesn't particularly react with alot of common
substances. This means it can easily be stored with little danger of
damage. Paper money can't even claim that. Heck, a good fire
can destroy it.

"genuine value" any less symbolic than paper's?
