***** AMERICA: Hispanic student stabs African American in racially motivated school fight |
VICTORVILLE, Calif. (AP) - A 19-year-old black student was stabbed by a
Hispanic youth at Silverado High School during a suspected racially
motivated campus confrontation.
The wounded student was treated by paramedics.
A group of black students was arguing with a 16-year-old Hispanic
student Wednesday morning when the stabbing occurred, said Shelly
Williams of the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department.

The Hispanic juvenile said he had the knife to protect himself. He was
carrying it because he had been jumped before. He didn't say if it was
at the school, and he was afraid," Williams said.
Principal Susan Levine released a statement saying only that
"paramedics were called and the student was treated and released." The
sheriff's spokeswoman said the victim wasn't cooperating with
investigators.
"We have reason to believe it was racially motivated," Williams said.
The 16-year-old was arrested and booked at Juvenile Hall for
investigation of felony assault with a deadly weapon and carrying a
weapon on school campus.
