Israel training intensively for nuclear strike on Iranian nuclear
plants
By Reuven Koret November 10, 2007
With no alternative but to fight fire with fire, the Israel Air Force
is training for a tactical nuclear strike on Iranian nuclear
production facilities. As hope fades for a diplomatic solution to
Iran's development of enriched uranium for production of weapons with
the primary purpose of destroying Israel, the IAF is practicing for a
mission to destroy key Iranian facilities, at least one with low-yield
nuclear munitions, the Times of London reported.
Citing "several Israeli sources," the Times said that two IAF
squadrons are training to blow up an Iranian facility using a
combination of precision laser bombs and low-yield nuclear "bunker-
busters". The Times report was supplemented by one from Fox News.
The attack would be the first with nuclear weapons since 1945, when
the United States dropped atomic bombs on the Japanese cities
Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The Israeli weapons would each have a force
equivalent to one-fifteenth of the Hiroshima bomb, the Times said.
Under the plans, the report said, conventional laser-guided bombs
would open shafts into the targets. Then the "mini-nukes" would then
be fired into a plant at Natanz, exploding deep underground to reduce
the risk of radioactive fallout.
"As soon as the green light is given, it will be one mission, one
strike and the Iranian nuclear project will be demolished," said one
of the sources.
Israeli intelligence recently announced that Iran is on the verge of
producing enough enriched uranium to make nuclear weapons by 2009.
Meir Dagan, head of Mossad, the Israeli intelligence service, told the
Knesset, Israel's parliament, also believes that the Iranians will
have a complete nuclear device by 2009.
Conventional strikes, IDF commanders believe, are insufficient to
destroy the deeply buried enrichment facilities, which are reportedly
built beneath at least 70 feet of concrete and rock and surrounded by
dozens of Iranian anti-aircraft batteries.
Israel has identified three prime targets south of Tehran believed to
be central to Iran's nuclear program, the Times reported:
Natanz, where thousands of centrifuges are being installed for uranium
enrichment;
A uranium conversion facility near Isfahan where, according to a
statement by an Iranian vice-president last week, 250 tons of gas for
the enrichment process have been stored; because this is located near
a city of 4.5 million people, Israeli may opt to use conventional
munitions here.
A heavy water reactor at Arak, which may in future produce enough
plutonium for a bomb.
Israeli officials believe that destroying all three sites would delay
Iran's nuclear program for years and prevent the Jewish State from
living in fear of a "second Holocaust," a mounting threat since
Iranian president, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, has been declaring that
"Israel must be wiped off the map" and promoting the desirability of
"a world without Israel."
Dr. Ephraim Sneh, the former deputy Israeli defense minister, said
last month: "The time is approaching when Israel and the international
community will have to decide whether to take military action against
Iran." But he lamented that "At the end of the day it is always down
to the Jews to deal with the problem."
But the United States is believed to be backing away from military
action in Iran, and the new US defense secretary, Robert Gates, has
described a strike against Iranian targets as a "last resort", leading
Israelis to believe that it will be left to the IAF to strike. Israeli
sources do not believe that the US is likely to give explicit
permission for Israel to use tactical nukes.
The Times, citing Israeli sources, said Israeli pilots have flown to
Gibraltar in recent weeks to train for the 2,000-mile round trip to
the Iranian targets.
The report said that the air force squadrons are based at Hatzerim in
the Negev desert and Tel Nof, south of Tel Aviv, under the personal
supervision of Major General Eliezer Shkedy, commander of the Israeli
Air Force, training to use Israel's arsenal of tactical nuclear
weapons on the mission.
The strike is expected to release nuclear material from the plants,
rendering the facilities uninhabitable and crippling their
reconstruction.
The Israelis believe that Iran's expected retaliation would be
constrained by fear of an Israeli second strike.
The leak of a possible nuclear option by Israel may be intentional, US
analysts have said. "In the cold war, we made it clear to the Russians
that it was a virtual certainty that nukes would fly and fly early,"
said an American defense source. "Israel may be adopting the same
tactics: 'You produce a weapon; you die'."

The hardest thing for me to understand is ....
Why would israel strike iran with nukes ala jets???
And why would Israel need to use nukes so close to home field>?
Also, how many fighters does iran have?, it cant be many...
If Israel used a nuke that close there would be some hellish fallout.
I would think praying against them would be better.

The idea is to leave the Natanz site "a little contanimated" on
purpose. Either
with our radioactive remnants, certainly with their own.
There are reports that it was a US plane that actually took out the
Syrian facility
in September. It's been said "we" used a "baby nuke" on that place.
It could
well be that the reason the Syrians have buried their site is because
it's a
little contaminated.

Why Must We Be the Loudest Drum-Beaters?
The Hour
Leonard Fein | Wed. Nov 07, 2007
It may be going too far to call Norman Podhoretz, the venerable editor
at-large of Commentary, a "warmonger." After all, his repeated call
for the United States to bomb Iran would not, as he sees it, begin a
new war; he has been arguing for some time now that we are already
engaged in World War IV - World War III was, he says, the Cold War -
and it is not clear that one can monger an ongoing war. (The current
war, says Podhoretz, is against "Islamofascism," and it began on
September 11, 2001.)
Podhoretz is hardly alone in his call for an assault against Iran. He
is supported by Vice President ***** Cheney, who has been beating the
drum persistently for several years and who, just weeks ago, cautioned
that "Our country, and the entire international community, cannot
stand by as a terror-supporting state fulfills its grandest
ambitions," that if Iran continues on its current course, the United
States and other nations are "prepared to impose serious
consequences." President Bush, just three days earlier, proposed that
"if you're interested in avoiding World War III, it seems like you
ought to be interested in preventing them [Iran] from having the
knowledge necessary to make a nuclear weapon."
Both Bush and Cheney insist that their preferred resolution of the
problem is via diplomacy, but to be blunt about it, there is no reason
to believe them, since that is exactly what they said during the run-
up to Iraq, while they were cooking the books and preparing for the
invasion. When they say that "we must keep all options on the table" -
a statement echoed these days by much of the let's-not-sound-wimpy
political elite - we are not wrong to infer the nature of the main
course being prepared in the kitchen while we munch on diversionary
hors d'oeuvres.
As to Podhoretz, now a senior foreign policy adviser to Rudy Giuliani,
he doesn't set much store in diplomatic efforts, nor, for that matter,
in sanctions. These, he says, merely give Iranian President Mahmoud
Ahmadinejad more time to achieve nuclear capability.
In a remarkable article in the Wall Street Journal this past May,
remarkable almost as much for its more than 5,000 words as for its
substance, Podhoretz wrote that "[T]he plain and brutal truth is that
if Iran is to be prevented from developing a nuclear arsenal, there is
no alternative to the actual use of military force - any more than
there was an alternative to force if Hitler was to be stopped in
1938."
The Hitler motif runs through the whole of Podhoretz's essay. As he
sees it, no one took Hitler seriously, even though he'd stated his
aims explicitly in "Mein Kampf." Instead, people - Neville Chamberlain
most notoriously, hence "1938" - thought "we can do business with
him." That business turned out to be appeasement, and you dare not
appease revolutionaries who have unlimited aims - read, Ahmadinejad.
And yes, Podhoretz acknowledges, the downside risks of armed
intervention are very real: Iran might "attack Israel with missiles
armed with non-nuclear warheads but possibly containing biological or
chemical weapons." There might "be a vast increase in the price of
oil, with catastrophic consequences for every economy in the world,
very much including our own." And "The worldwide outcry against the
inevitable civilian casualties would make the anti-Americanism of
today look like a love-fest."
Yet it would be worse still to allow Iran to have the bomb. And since
that may happen sooner rather than later, we must "strike... as soon as
it is logistically possible."
Podhoretz, who has directly explained his views to Bush, "guesses"
that the president intends, while still in office, "to order air
strikes against the Iranian nuclear facilities from the three U.S.
aircraft carriers already sitting nearby." Bush, he says, is "a man
who knows evil when he sees it and who has demonstrated an unfailingly
courageous willingness to endure vilification and contumely in setting
his face against it. It now remains to be seen whether this president,
battered more mercilessly and with less justification than any other
in living memory... will find it possible to take the only action that
can stop Iran from following through on its evil intentions both
toward us and toward Israel. As an American and as a Jew, I pray with
all my heart that he will."
How much heart Podhoretz has is a matter of speculation. After all, he
says that when Iran seized 15 British sailors, Britain "should have
threatened to bomb the Iranians into smithereens if the sailors
weren't returned immediately. They should have threatened it. Whether
they would have had to carry out the threat, I doubt; maybe they would
have."
And in any case, if we're right to fret about Iran, why not agonize
over Pakistan, clearly the more imminent nuclear threat?
Podhoretz wants to use force now. Others, including a disturbing
number of major Jewish organizations, endorse "merely" the threat of
force, loudly proclaiming that "all options" must be on the table. Is
such a threat a useful deterrent, or does it instead increase Iran's
very real sense of vulnerability, thereby encouraging precisely the
behavior it is meant to deter?
And is not such talk a way of creeping toward war? Another real war
just now? Madness. Yet that is the risk being pressed upon us.
Why must Jewish organizations be and be seen as the loudest drum-
beaters of all? Why can we not bring ourselves to say that military
intervention is not on the table at all? Why not stash it under the
table, out of sight, and mount instead a diplomatic assault?
Germany, 1938? The more relevant and equally cautionary precedent is
Iraq, 2003 - and counting.

Bush Threat of World War III: Cuban Missile Crisis Redux
by Prof. Francis Boyle
http://www.globalresearch.ca/index.php?context=viewArticle&code=BOY20071108&articleId=7285
www.GlobalResearch.ca
During the course of an October 17, 2007 press conference, President
Bush Jr. terrorized the entire world with the threat of World War III
if he could not work his illegal will upon Iran . Then Russian
President Vladimir Putin responded in kind by likewise terrorizing the
entire world with the prospect of yet another Cuban Missile Crisis if
he did not get his way on the provocative anti-ballistic missile
(A.B.M.) systems that the Bush Jr. administration plans to locate in
Poland and the Czech Republic. These American A.B.M.s in Europe will
constitute a necessary adjunct to the longstanding U.S. plan of
launching a strategic nuclear first-strike against the former Soviet
Union, now reincarnated as the Russian Federation . Seemingly
effective U.S. A.B.M. systems will be required to take out the
miniscule Russian strategic nuclear retaliatory forces that might
survive a U.S. first-strike.
What really matters here are the perceptions: Namely, the Neo-Cons in
the Bush Jr. administration believe that with the deployment of a
facially successful strategic nuclear first-strike capability
necessarily including A.B.M.s, the U.S. government could ultimately
compel nuclear-armed Russia or China or both to do its bidding during
a geopolitical crisis (e.g., over Iran or Cuba again). The classic
case in point here was the October 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis when the
Soviet government knew that the United States wielded both strategic
nuclear and conventional area military superiority, so it capitulated.
American international political scientists have almost unanimously
applauded this existential nuclear brinksmanship inflicted upon
humanity by The Best and the Brightest (1972) of the Kennedy
administration as a most salutary example of aggressive "compellence"
as opposed to allegedly defensive "deterrence."
Under the auspices of the Bush Jr. Neo-Cons, the U.S. government is
breaking out of a publicly proclaimed strategic nuclear "deterrence"
posture and moving into adopting a strategic nuclear "compellence"
strategy with respect to nuclear-armed Russia and China , let alone
the rest of the world. The Bush Jr. Neo-Cons calculate that henceforth
the United States government will be able to compel even strategically-
nuclear-armed adversaries like Russia or China or both to back down in
a crisis, or otherwise to do its will, or at least to do nothing to
stop it from attaining its geopolitical objectives. But see Stanley
Kubrick's Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love
the Bomb (1964).
By contrast, it was the terror of my own personal imminent nuclear
annihilation during the Cuban Missile Crisis that first sparked my
interest in studying international relations and U.S. foreign policy
as a young boy of 12: "I can do a better job than this!"
Unfortunately, my generation of Americans has not. But the next
generation must pick up the torch and fight for the very survival of
humanity and our shared planet earth.

Deterrence" (Clarity Press: 2002).
