3rd windstorm in week pummels B.C. coast
157 km/h winds hit Victoria as power cut for 250,000 people
Dec. 16, 2006. 12:33 AM
VANCOUVER-The third Pacific storm to smack Canada's West Coast this
week pounded Vancouver Island and southern B.C. with howling winds that
left thousands of people without power.
At the peak of yesterday's blast before daybreak, winds of 157 km/h
were recorded in Victoria, where the most trees toppled, taking down
power lines, and leaving 250,000 households without power.
By last night, 800 staff and contract crews - expected to do repairs
all weekend - were scrambling to restore power to 170,000 customers.
"Staff are working as fast as they can," Vancouver Mayor Sam Sullivan
said in a statement.
"We appreciate the public's patience ..."
The havoc cancelled ferry sailings, disrupted transit and closed
schools.
Vancouver's famed Stanley Park has been closed for the weekend, as has
the aquarium.
As the latest storm throttled the coast, 20,000 customers were still
without power from earlier storms this week.
In hard-hit North Vancouver, residents were asked to steer clear of all
parks and trails because of danger from downed trees.
B.C. Hydro spokeswoman Elisha Moreno said back-to-back storms are
stretching repair crews to the limit and were "getting storm fatigue."
"First thing, we're looking at ... is circuits to hospitals, care
homes, pumping stations, sewage and water treatment plants and then ...
larger circuits" to get smaller pockets and homes back on.
She advised people to plan on being without power for 72 hours.
"Folks around here who have worked here 30 to 35 years have not seen
storms of this magnitude before ever."
Hydro isn't providing restoration estimates. We don't want to create
any false sense of optimism, she said, given many will be in the dark
three days.

I was without power for over two days and I got sick and tired of
peanut butter and jelly sandwiches! It was spoooooky to see a large
city almost totally black at night. I live near Seattle.

I live in Vancouver, BC. It was all so exciting!!! A lot of big old trees
fell. They say it was worse than huricane Freda that came here in 1962.
First Floods, Then no water, then snow, now winds. What next? An
Earthquake?

With 170,000 homes without power I thought it might be a good idea to
purchase a generator to power fridges, freezers and the furnace. Last week
Costco had at least a dozen in every store, today nada, not a single one
left west of Calgary. I guess I'll have to wait for the next shipment in
late February. I hope we don't have anymore windstorms or natural disasters
until then.

I always was a 'battery freak' so I had lotsa' of 'em around to power
lights, a radio, an LCD 2" TV (jeez, it ate 4 penlight cells every 3
hrs!)...and, yes, a small cheap Casio keyboard. The keyboard kept me
entertained more than anything else. Have a fireplace and had some wood
stored, so there was some heat. But, man, the food situation was a *****
poor one...I intend to have more canned/dry stuff around to eat next
time.
Makes ya greatly appreciate the birth of Thomas Edison...LOL!

Imagine how 'exciting' it'd be after a subduction quake! If you're not
dead or injured, imagine wandering around in the wet winter cold with
no home, no food, no water, and not even a crapper to sit on!
No internet, vid games, tv, stereo...
Yes, imagine how 'exciting' it would be, Mondo...
It'd make losing electrical power for a few days look like a Sunday
afternoon picnic with the Partridge Family...
