A New Repugnant Repuglican Scandal |

A new scandal
Sarah Baxter
Just when the Republicans thought it couldn=E2=80=99t get any worse, it has.
On Friday a leading evangelical preacher, conservative opponent of gay
marriage and keen supporter of President George Bush found himself
mired in allegations of paying for sex with a male escort.
It would be hard to imagine a more combustible mix of religion,
politics and hypocrisy. The Rev Ted Haggard, 50, who is married with
children, was the president of the National Association of
Evangelicals, which represents some 30m Christians across America,
until he stepped down on Friday.
According to Mike Jones, a male escort from Denver, Haggard has, when
not publicly campaigning for heterosexual marriage or preaching from
the pulpit of his mega-church in Colorado Springs, been privately
paying for gay sex once a month for the past three years. He also
allegedly took illegal drugs immediately before indulging.
=E2=80=9CPastor Ted=E2=80=9D, as Haggard, above, has become known, denied t=
he
allegations but stepped down from his ministry. He also resigned as
leader of his New Life church after its board found him guilty of
=E2=80=9Csexually immoral conduct=E2=80=9D.
It was just a =E2=80=9Cmassage=E2=80=9D, Haggard insisted, though he admitt=
ed
buying the illegal drug methamphetamine from Jones. Some gay men use it
to heighten sexual pleasure.
=E2=80=9CI was tempted. I bought it. But I never used it,=E2=80=9D he said.
Jones said Haggard=E2=80=99s denials were ridiculous. =E2=80=9CWhat? I smok=
ed it
and didn=E2=80=99t inhale? It=E2=80=99s the same scenario,=E2=80=9D he said.
Jones said he decided to come forward after Haggard campaigned for
amendment 43 in Colorado, which defines marriage as a union between a
man and a woman. =E2=80=9CHe=E2=80=99s preaching against homosexuals and ye=
t he=E2=80=99s
having gay sex,=E2=80=9D Jones said.
Haggard has advised the White House on evangelical matters and is a
friend of James Dobson, a highly influential conservative Christian
leader. Dobson said he was =E2=80=9Cheartsick=E2=80=9D and urged Christians=
to pray
for Haggard this weekend. A new scandal

Top US pastor sacked amid sex row
One of the US's most influential evangelical preachers has been
dismissed by his church for what it called "sexually immoral conduct".
The Reverend Ted Haggard, a vocal opponent of gay marriage, on Friday
admitted buying drugs and having a massage from a gay masseur.
But he denied using the methamphetamine or having sex with the man.
The New Life Church said its inquiries and his public statements proved
Pastor Haggard had committed immoral conduct.
It has been decided that "the most positive and productive direction
for our church is his dismissal and removal," the Colorado-based church
said in a statement on its website.
'Pastor Ted'
Mr Haggard, who on Thursday stepped down as the head of the 30m-strong
National Association of Evangelicals, said he bought methamphetamine
but "never used it".
The issue is being played out against the backdrop of a vote in
Colorado and seven other US states on Tuesday on whether to ban
same-sex marriages.
Mr Haggard, 50, has been a vocal opponent of the unions.
Denver man Mike Jones, 49, told a radio show he had been paid to have
sex with Mr Haggard nearly every month over the past three years.
Mr Haggard said he had not had sex with Mr Jones but did receive a
massage after being referred to him by a Denver hotel.
Mr Haggard, who is also known as "Pastor Ted" and has five children,
has close contacts with the White House.

It's very plausible Haggard was reaching out to a troubled individual

From the quick manner in which his church booted him out, I'd say there's
virtually no chance that they met through any church ministry program, nor
that anyone in the church had any inkling that Haggard was attempting to
engage in such ministering activities outside the organization. As we all
know, evangelicals are not exactly noted for keeping their mouths shut
about the slightest activity that can be twisted to make them look good,
so .... I'd say it's not very plausible that any ministering was being
done on the part of Haggard.
