Object: About quatrain V-37
*
Quatrain V-37 was published in three of the four original
editions of the Prophecies. It first appears at page 116 of the
so-called November 1557 Du Rosne edition:
*
------------ C E N T V R I E___C I N Q V I E S M E. ----------
------------------ (édition de novembre 1557) ----------------
*
------------------------- X X X V I I ------------------------
--------- Trois cens seront d'vn vouloir & accord, -----------
--------- Que pour venir au bout de leur attainte: ----------
--------- Vingtz moys apres tous & recordz, ------------------
--------- Leur roy trahir simulant haine faincte. ------------
*
It can also be found at page 87 of the ensuing Du Rosne edition,
the so-called September 1557 edition (the so-called November
edition having *preceded* the so-called September edition). Note
that line 3 is too short in both cases, even though these were
two distinct and very different editions by the same printer:
*
------------ C E N T V R I E___C I N Q V I E S M E. ----------
----------------- (édition de septembre 1557) ----------------
*
------------------------- x x x v i i ------------------------
--------- Trois cents seront d'vn vouloir & accord, ----------
--------- Que pour venir au bout de leur attainte: -----------
--------- Vingtz moys apres tous & recordz, ------------------
--------- Leur roy trahir simulant haisne faincte. -----------
*
It is interesting to see that the spelling was modified in line 1
and line 4 (cens - cents, and haine - haisne), thereby indicating
that the second was not a mere copy of the first. A careful
reader also noted that the quatrain numbering is in small
capitals in the second case, but was in full capitals in the
first.
*
Finally, one also finds quatrain V-37 at page 89 of the original
Rigaud edition, published in my view in June 1558, but known as
the so-called 1568 edition. Contrary to the two previous cases,
the Centurie's number is not in full letters but in Roman
numeral:
*
--------------------- C E N T V R I E___V. -------------------
----------------- (édition prétendue de 1568) ----------------
*
------------------------- X X X V I I. -----------------------
--------- Trois cents seront d'vn vouloir & accord, ----------
--------- Que pour venir au bout de leur attaincte: ----------
--------- Vingts mois apres tous & records, ------------------
--------- Leur Roy trahi simulant haine faincte. -------------
*
More spelling changes (attainte - attaincte, Vingtz moys - Vingts
mois, roy - Roy) and one word change: trahir - trahi.
*
Two separate printers, three original editions, all published
during Nostradamus' lifetime, and *none* corrects line 3 which is
too short in all three cases.
*
A smart reader could therefore conclude that Nostradamus wanted
line 3 to be defective, i.e., too short. Otherwise, as he had two
opportunities to have it corrected and made 'normal', he would
have been able to do so. He did not do so. Why not?
*
IT'S THE ANAGRAM, STUPID!
*
Have a nice day, folks!

We note though that the Quatrain in question conforms to the basic
rules of a Quatrain, ie lines 1 and 3 rhyme as do 2 and 4.
We also note no attempt to explain it other than the printers errors.
