Poll shows knowledge of U.S. dead, but huge underestimation of Iraqis
WASHINGTON - One person can tell you precisely how many Americans have been
killed in Iraq. Another pays close attention to the names and hometowns of
those who die each week. A third mourns for the families of fallen U.S.
troops, but also figures it was their choice to enlist.
Americans are keenly aware of how many U.S. forces have lost their lives in
Iraq, according to a new AP-Ipsos poll. But they woefully underestimate the
number of Iraqi civilians who have been killed.

No surprise there. The news media, for the most part, are not reporting
Iraqi civilian casualties. Nobody wants to hear that their government is
responsible for civilian deaths, so I'm guessing that the media doesn't
report it because they don't want more people to start tuning into Fox,
the official Bush Cult station. ;-)

I thought is was because they consider them to be nothing more insects. How
many people keep track of the number of insects they kill?

Part of the Iraqi civilian death tally has been due to Iraqis not
accurately keeping count. Some civilians were actually buried by their
relatives without notifying the government officials. My attitude is
in the middle ground here between what Woodswun thinks and you think.
I understand that the Iraqi census hasn't been really accurate,
either.
I believe the deaths of foreigners (non-US) doesn't have the emotional
or topical impact in the news that the deaths of Americans have. You
can see this consistently over the decades. One American death is
given more coverage, longer airtime, than, let's say, 20 foreigners'
deaths. The endurance of the story is even longer for American deaths.
But, realistically, the same can be said for foreign news coverage of
American deaths. Romanians' deaths would be given more coverage in
Romania than American deaths...the news biz is pretty provincial in
its humanitarian concern. And that applies to coverage that has
nothing to do with deaths or injuries. A stadium roof collapse in
Vancouver, BC, received a lot more attention in your town than it did
down here in Seattle, for example.
This newsy attitude toward peoples' deaths and injuries serves to make
the audience a bit jaded about human suffering or expiration. It all
flies by fast every day...hardly anyone can remember what happened the
day before, especially when it's about car accidents or deadly house
fires.
Given this, I do know the US bombardment has killed many thousands
more than died on 9-11. How many more is in contention, depending on
whether you're for Bush's debacle or against. Are human beings like
ants to some of the audience in TV land? Yes. Some give daily deaths
little thought, especially the young. A bit more interest comes along
as the viewer has their relatives or family die off, or they
themselves develop serious health problems.

No, that's definitely not it. The media isn't reporting civilian deaths,
and the media lives by ratings (and, perhaps, pressure from other
sources). If we thought they were only insects, we wouldn't mind one bit
hearing about massive deaths - but we aren't even hearing about it, for
the most part.
