poetry made up of cryptic anagrams led to a literary artform
called... avoidance. A question would be asked and the person or
persons who would know the answer to the question would decline
to answer it, as answering it would demonstrate their recognition
of the presence of an enciphered text, something they did not
want to do.

Nostradamus voulait encore une fois montrer qu'il a recours aux
anagrammes, les adversaires de cette idée préférant garder le
silence plutôt que d'admettre que l'interversion des deux lettres
(sans effet sur l'anagramme du quatrième vers) ne permet aucune
autre explication.
