Australians Vote on 11 Years of Conservative Rule
By VOA News
24 November 2007
Australian Prime Minister John Howard casts his ballot at a suburban
Sydney school in federal election, 24 Nov 2007
Australians have begun voting to decide whether or not to give Prime
Minister John Howard another term after 11 years in office.
The prime minister trailed in the polls going into the race. His
opponent, Labor Party leader Kevin Rudd, has campaigned on a platform
of change.
Mr. Howard, who leads the conservative party, has staked his future on
the past, claiming credit for an economic boom and warning that Mr.
Rudd cannot be trusted to maintain the country's prosperity.
The prime minster is a close ally of President Bush, and has pledged
to keep Australian forces in Iraq until local troops can take care of
their own security.
But Mr. Rudd, a former diplomat, says he will withdraw the 500 combat
troops from Iraq and sign the Kyoto climate treaty, which Mr. Howard
has staunchly refused to support.
Mr. Howard also risks becoming the first prime minister to lose his
own seat in the election. Boundary changes have turned his district
into a highly contested race.
During the past week, Mr. Howard spent much of his time distancing
himself and his party from political flyers that accuse the Labor
Party of sympathizing with terrorists. The flyers suggest that the
Labor Party is sympathetic to the Bali bombers - terrorists who killed
202 people, including 88 Australians, on the Indonesian island of Bali
in 2002.

Last opinion poll predicts ALP win
November 24, 2007 12:56pm
l
LABOR will clinch a comfortable victory in today's federal election,
according to the last opinion poll.
The Morgan Poll, taken on election eve, shows support for the ALP
remained relatively steady in the final count down to the ballot.
Support for Labor stood at 53.5 per cent on a two-party preferred
basis, compared to the Coalition's 46.5 per cent.
Labor has lost 1 per cent to the Coalition since the last Morgan Poll,
taken on Wednesday and Thursday.
The ALP's lead represents a 6.2 per cent swing to Labor.
However, in the crucial marginal Coalition electorates, where Labor
needs to win 16 seats, the swing is slightly less at 5.2 per cent, the
poll shows.
On primary votes, the count is closer. Labor leads with 43.5 per cent
of the vote, compared to the coalition's 41.5 per cent.
While the poll suggests the Coalition is poised to lose the election,
Prime Minister John Howard and Environment Minister Malcolm Turnbull
are expected to retain their seats.
"John Howard and Malcolm Turnbull should be returned in Bennelong and
Wentworth respectively, with the Liberals also a good chance to pick
up one, possibly two, seats in Western Australia,'' pollster Gary
Morgan said.
"However, the Coalition looks likely to lose a significant number of
seats in Victoria and Queensland.
"Previous research has shown that about one-in-five electors finally
decide who to vote for on election day, so any publicity on the day,
or election material at polling booths, can have a significant impact
on the undecided.''
The polls signalling a Labor victory have rubbed off on voters.
Almost six-in-ten (59 per cent) of Australians polled believe the ALP
will win government, compared to 26 per cent favouring the Coalition.
Some 15 per cent were unsure.
