BUSH DEFIES THREATS, CONTINUES PLANS TO VISIT KANSAS TORNADO DISASTER
---------------------------------------------------------
Wichita Psychic's Claim of Bush Assassination Under Federal Investigation
WASHINGTON, DC -- (AP) -- President Bush defied alleged threats to his
life and continued with his plans today to visit Greensburg, Kansas, a
small town nearly obliterated by a huge tornado earlier this week,
according to a press release from the White House Press Secretary's
office.
Unconfirmed reports from local police late Tuesday that some Greensburg
residents were planning to "teach the President a lesson" apparently
stemmed from anger over the shortage of National Guard resources.
Equipment shortages reportedly were caused by diverting various vehicles
for use in the Iraq War, leaving the Kansas National Guard armories low on
available humvees, transport trucks, and other vehicles.
Rumors circulated late yesterday that at least a dozen FBI agents arrived
in the Greensburg area to investigate claims by local police that some
townspeople were planning to harm the President. A FBI's press liaison
spokesperson denied the reports.
A popular Wichita television psychic was reported by The Wichita Eagle's
online news venue, Kansas.com, to have had a "horrifying vision" of
President Bush being hung from a tree by angry townspeople.
Psychic Maria Tendergrass said her vision showed a large group of "heavily
armed townspeople" overpowering Bush's security guards, dragging him to a
tree, and hanging him by the neck "until he was dead."
Soon after the news report on Tendergrass's vision was posted online, it
was removed. A managing editor for The Wichita Eagle told AP the story was
removed at the request of the FBI and Secret Service, but both services'
spokespersons denied it.
Tendergrass could not be reached by the Associated Press for comment. Her
telephone answering service apparently had been disconnected.
A Wichita police spokesperson said detectives were cooperating with
federal authorities in investigating Tendergrass's psychic business and
background. She said they were unable to locate Tendergrass today, but
would continue a "regional multi-level search" for her.
Rumors circulated on a Wichita radio talk show early this morning that
Tendergrass was part of a plot to harm President Bush. One caller claimed
he personally knew Tendergrass and that she had told him she "hated Bush's
guts and wanted him dead." Her intense anger, he said, was caused by the
loss of her husband in the 2005 Katrina Hurricane disaster that she blamed
on the ineptness of Bush and other high government officials.
"She thought the Bush administration could've handled the disaster
preparation and relief effort much better," the unidentified caller said.
"She told me she thought he was a cold-blooded murderer and wanted so
badly for Bush to die that she even prayed for God to kill him. She once
told me she hoped a terrorist would toss a grenade at him or cut off his
head with a sword."
"I think she's nuts, totally off her rocker, but I agree that Bush is
widely disliked," the caller added. "I can't stand him, either, but he
needs to be impeached, not hanged."
According to a Newsweek poll, Bush's approval rating has fallen to 28%,
the lowest of any President in 30 years.
