Yes, for another 3 and half years.
It occurs to me that a second term president doesn't really have to give
a damn. He can't be elected for a third term, so perhaps this is when
he would be likely to spring policies that would be unpopular. What can
the electorate do?
Perhaps the 2 term maximum works against the best interests of the people?

You can and do get changes in PM during the course of a government,
since the PM is simply the leader of the party in government (what you

Howard is the second longest serving PM in our History, only Sir Robert

In Oz, they are all appointed by government, and there is only one
police force in each state so there are no elections for that either,
that's a promotion/appointment for a serving senior policeman.
Oh, a 'sheriff' here is not a local police officer, but an officer of
the court and has no Police like duties. Bottom line is that law

I was originally a staunch Labor (sorta like your democrats) voter. But
the ALP here has gone way too left wing radical, and gone from being
mildly green to rabidly so and have picked up their absolute pacifist
attitudes with it. They were decimated at the last election.
Interestingly they now lead the government by 4 points after ditching
their leader and recycling a previous one. Whether this continues will
depend on a number of things, but we have 3 + years to go before the
next election so it's not yet significant. There is some evidence the
ALP are trying to regain the middle ground as they have learned a hard
lesson that many people don't appreciate some of the extremist greenie
attitudes.

years from now. I know that the Democrats will never say he is other
than their worst nightmare, but then they say that about all
Republican Presidents, as do the Republicans about Democrat Presidents.
Well, I don't know about that. I have a very high regard for Ford.
The only ones I really have a problem with are the Reagan/Bush cabal,
Yet they got re-elected.
haven't had any problems with any of the other ones. Hated Kennedy
and Johnson.
Actually, I liked Kennedy.... Johnson struck me as completely out of
his element.
Kennedy was just as dangerous as Bush, IMHO. He's the one that really
started the Cuban missile crisis, and he put his brother in the AG
position just because his daddy wanted him to. "Do what Daddy tells
you" is not a valid rational for selecting your staff.
Johnson was crude and boorish, and he belonged more in a junk yard than
the White House. (Of course, I was a kid at the time, but that's the
general impression I get of the guy in hindsight).
Actually, I'm a moderate Republican, switched to Democrat when I saw
the fundie loons taking over the party. Never voted Democrat in my
life until Reagan's second go-round. There are a lot like me out there.
There is some evidence the
ALP are trying to regain the middle ground as they have learned a hard
lesson that many people don't appreciate some of the extremist greenie
attitudes.
I'm more of the "Walk softly and carry a big stick" mindset. You get a
lot more cooperation if you are cooperative and treat others with
dignity - but you do have that stick available, if it comes down to it.

The President put IRBMs in Turkey and you blame the Soviets for doing the

It was actually in response of nuclear missle bases in Turkey which is
as close to Russia as Cuba is to the US. But for some reason, Americans
think it is ok when they do these things (because they believe it is for
an ultimate good?), but not if others do it (because it can't be
anything but for evil reasons?).

Well, with ~Stalin~ it couldn't have been for any good reasons, but
can't speak for the others. I pretty much think they've mostly been
obnoxious, with a couple of halfway decent one thrown in there.

Hey Meathead, lacking confidence in your elected leaders is the opposite
of hating your country.
Ease up on knocking down your little straw men ... it's getting tedious.
