CRAWFORD, TX -- (AP) -- President George Bush said today that terrorists
don't have a chance to win and that he would "call down the thunder" on
them.
"The evil terrorists over there don't have a chance to win...we will
prevail, and if need be, I'll call down the thunder on them," Bush told
reporters at his Crawford ranch.
Some observers speculated the unusual remark apparently originated from
the script of a 1993 Western movie, "Tombstone," in which famed lawman,
Wyatt Earp, played by Kurt Russell, yelled to bad guy Ike Clanton, "You
called down the thunder...you tell 'em I'm comin' and Hell's comin' with
me!"
Bush once was overheard to have told advisor Karl Rove that one of his
favorite movies is "Tombstone". He was quoted as saying, "I love that film
because, you know, I think I'm like that heroic Earp guy...cleanin' up the
evil, gettin' rid of the bad guys in showdowns."
His latest strange caustic remark seemed to recall memories of a tough
statement Bush made in 2003 when he challenged Iraqi insurgents to push
American troops out of that nation. "Bring it on!" Bush was then quoted as
saying.
After receiving much criticism he had jeopardized American service
personnel's lives by making that challenge, Bush later said his words
could've been "more carefully chosen."
