Bill Clinton has told how ghostly visions of death which he saw
while he was having open heart surgery were chased away by images of his
wife and daughter.
The former American president described how he saw the dreamy
images of Hillary and Chelsea when surgeons stopped his heart for 73
minutes during a quadruple bypass operation.
Mr Clinton, 58, said he was not afraid before the operation seven
weeks ago, but admitted that he knew he could be close to death.
"I saw dark masks crushing, like death masks being crushed, in
series," he told the US television station ABC News.
"Then I'd see these great circles of light. And then, like,
Hillary's picture or Chelsea's face would appear on the light, and then
they'd fly off into the dark, into the distance.
"And other people that I knew and cared about. It was amazing."
Mr Clinton said he was not morbid, a characteristic he put down to
the fact his father died before he was born.
But he added: "Somewhere deep in your self-conscious you know
you're very close to your own mortality when they saw you open and flop
your heart out."
He also said his wife was upset by the surgery. "She's a pretty
stiff-upper-lip type, but I could tell she was upset about it. And I said,
'Look, you know, we dodged a bullet here'."
Although Mr Clinton returned to the campaign trail for next week's
presidential elections this week, he said he wished he could have done
more to help Senator John Kerry, the Democratic candidate.
But he added that he had enjoyed resting after the surgery. "I'm
sleeping more than I have since I turned 21. And I like being able to
read, and this total reflection has been very good for me," he said.
"It's been very helpful. And if you work like I have, all your
life, having a period of enforced contemplation and rest is really good."

This sounds completely 'plausible during heart surgery, as there is a period in
the surgery that the heart is stopped completely. (i.e. dead)
