D.C. to use eminent domain for ballpark
WASHINGTON, Oct. 6 (UPI) -- The District of Columbia plans to use
eminent domain to acquire land for the Washington Nationals ballpark.
The Washington Times reports 10 of the 23 landowners affected have not
responded to purchase offers.
The city notified landowners in April they must be off the 21-acre site
by Dec. 31. Construction of a new stadium is scheduled to begin in
March with completion expected by the beginning of the 2008 baseball
season.
The Nationals have been using RFK Stadium for their home games.
Some property owners told the Times the city has not offered enough
money, while some others plan to sue over the use of eminent domain.
These suits are unlikely to succeed, given the recent Supreme Court
decision giving local government wide power to use eminent domain for
economic purposes.
