No, people like that weren't chosen, they became that after being chosen.
Not that I'm justifying the actions of these people in any way, but these
soldiers are NOT getting the kind of support and direction from their
superiors that they need to have any kind of mental balance. Heck, they
aren't even getting stuff like armor, for god's sake! (And the VA will
give them equally abysmal treatment when they come home with health issues.)
