A plastic fuel tank, custom built and hidden inside a van, has been
used to illegally milk 45,000 litres of diesel from a Sydney service
station over a six-week period, police alleged yesterday.
The discovery of the home-made fuel tanker, holding 1000 litres, was
made by private detectives hired by the owners of the garage on Windsor
Road, Northmead.
Police are investigating the possibility that other petrol station
operators may have also been hit as fuel prices continue to soar.
Crime manager at Castle Hill police, Detective Inspector Gary Hutchen,
said yesterday the owners of the garage discovered two weeks ago that
they had a major discrepancy in the level of diesel stored in
underground tanks and feared a leak. A safety inspection was conducted
on the tanks, which found them intact.
Detective Inspector Hutchen said the owners then employed a private
security firm to find out how 45,000 litres had disappeared.
On Sunday evening a white Toyota van was spotted pulling into the
garage and coming to a halt near the underground diesel tanks. A man
emerged and remained at the fuel tanks for 15 minutes before driving
away.
Police yesterday raided a home in nearby Windermere Avenue, Northmead,
seized the van and arrested its 36-year-old owner. Inside the van was a
pump connected to the battery and two large hoses to draw fuel from
underground tanks.
