Boy punished for talking about gay mom
Monday, December 1, 2003 Posted: 10:17 PM EST (0317 GMT)
LAFAYETTE, Louisiana (AP) -- A 7-year-old boy was scolded and forced to
write "I will never use the word 'gay' in school again" after he told a
classmate about his lesbian mother, the American Civil Liberties Union
alleged Monday.
Second-grader Marcus McLaurin was waiting for recess November 11 at Ernest
Gaullet Elementary School when a classmate asked about Marcus' mother and
father, the ACLU said in a complaint.
Marcus responded he had two mothers because his mother is gay. When the
other child asked for explanation, Marcus told him: "Gay is when a girl
likes another girl," according to the complaint.
A teacher who heard the remark scolded Marcus, telling him "gay" was a "bad
word" and sending him to the principal's office. The following week, Marcus
had to come to school early and repeatedly write: "I will never use the word
'gay' in school again."
A phone message left for Lafayette Parish schools superintendent James
Easton was not immediately returned.
The ACLU is demanding the case be removed from Marcus' file and that the
school apologize to the boy and his mother, Sharon Huff.
"I was concerned when the assistant principal called and told me my son had
said a word so bad that he didn't want to repeat it over the phone," Huff
said. "But that was nothing compared to the shock I felt when my little boy
came home and told me that his teacher had told him his family is a dirty
word."

They should not have punished the boy, but they should have hauled the
'two mommies' in for a conference and lectured them on how it is
inapropriate for their child to discuss their odd sexual preference at
school and they should teach him an alternative way of explaining it
other the using the word gay or just have him keep it to himself.
This would be alright in junior or senior high school but not in
elementary school where most of the kids have not had the 'little talk'
about where babies come from.
I am not too happy that I was forced to explain what gay means to my 8
year old daughter before ever having told her the normal facts of life
because of other children at her school use the word every day and have
called her "gay" because she gives her friends a hug or a kiss on the
cheek.
By Marcus' explanation that gay is when a girl likes another girl, shows
that these kids are too young to comprehend the meaning of the word and
it is no wonder that they would think two third grade girls were gay if
they hugged or kissed each other goodbye.
Keep your GAY lifestyle off of the playground and out of the elementary
school where my kids go and don't need to learn such things at their
young age.......thank you very much!

What's wrong with the word "gay"?
"Odd sexual preference"? They live together...should they tell the kid
"hey it's like this but don't tell anyone 'cos it's odd...we, your "parents"
are *odd*"
Shall they teach their own kid intolerance?

It has nothing to do with where babies come from...not in this case anyway.

Yes exactly, that's what happens when kids are told that it's odd! This type
of
thing should be explained to any kid that asks about it regardless of age.
Preferably
by a responsibe adult and not other kids. A healthy attitude to sexuality,
of whatever
persuasion, is only positive.
By Marcus' explanation that gay is when a girl likes another girl, shows

No. That's because they haven't had it explained to them so they absorb
what they hear from other kids. If they were told in a responsible way then
it would be different.
Keep your GAY lifestyle off of the playground and out of the elementary
school where my kids go and don't need to learn such things at their

So they'll be filled up with the myths of the school yard instead and grow
up to be
intolerant adults...no thank you very much. When my kids have asked about
sex it has been explained to them, either by me or their mother. Or if at
school their
teachers have done it.
So there!

I believe my second post explains that kids should be taught by the
parents! They should not discuss this at elementary school. Gay or
straight sex is not appropriate for this age to be discussed among each
other.
And yes....I'm well aware about how wide open you all are over there in

How dare you tell the Liberals that they shouldn't teach our children about sex

They weren't discussing sex, there was nothing remotely sexual in the
conversation - that was projected into the conversation by adults. The students
were discussing the difference between having two mommies and having a mommy
and daddy.

Yes exactly, I wonder what Soozy would have to say to a child who wonders
where his/her little brother suddenly came from. Under a head of cabbage
maybe...or perhaps a stork. God only knows what pantyboy would come up with

Maybe they come from "underneath bushes".....huh, Chris? :)
That little boy didn't come from two lesbians, that's for sure!
You think they are telling that kid the truth? Two gay mommies and no
father? Everybody has a father.....even if you don't know who he is! And
I don't believe it was mentioned if this kid was adopted by the two

Fucked if I can show you that! What do they write on the birthcert of a kid
who's mother
doesn't know who the father is or if she was on holiday in Europe, got
fucked, ended up
pregnant, he doesn't know and she has no idea about him either? All she

'gay' should be removed from any description of homosexuals as it
trivialises the genetic defects in these people.
'Gay' parades, 'Gay rights' disgust. Any queers reading this...please

Why SHOULDN'T he, if they haven't proven they're NOT capable?

Boy punished for talking about gay mom

LOL! LOUISIANA! It figures! Bunch of backwards Cajun coonasses!
LAFAYETTE, Louisiana (AP) -- A
7-year-old boy was scolded and forced
to write "I will never use the word 'gay'
in school again" after he told a
classmate about his lesbian mother, the
American Civil Liberties Union alleged
Monday.
Second-grader Marcus McLaurin was
waiting for recess November 11 at
Ernest Gaullet Elementary School when
a classmate asked about Marcus'
mother and father, the ACLU said in a
complaint.
Marcus responded he had two mothers
because his mother is gay. When the
other child asked for explanation,
Marcus told him: "Gay is when a girl
likes another girl," according to the
complaint.
I am not too happy that I was forced to explain what gay means to my 8
year old daughter before ever having told her the normal facts of life
because of other children at her school use the word every day and have
called her "gay" because she gives her friends a hug or a kiss on the
cheek.
So, you were forced into an explanation of what gay means because of other
children taunting your daughter. What makes you so sure that the parents of
this child were not in the same situation when they gave this information to
their child? If they live in a neighborhood, it would only take one older child
making a statement about two women living together in the same neighborhood.
My daughter was first exposed to the term "gay" to mean homosexual orientation
when she was in 2nd grade (age 7). Her class was reading a poem about a "gay
little bird" and she was the only one who didn't find anything particularly
amusing about it - and promptly became the focus of much taunting. (She thought
they were a bunch of jerks for their reaction to the poem, fortunately).
Point is - it's very rarely the parents volunteering age-inappropriate terms to
their children, it's almost always other kids on the playground or on the bus
that force the issue onto parents, just as you experienced yourself.

We have no way of knowing that, there is not too much to draw from in
the article. I do think that they should have told the child that it is
not to be discussed outside of their home, especially at school as it is
nobody else business.
I told my daughter pretty much the same thing......that she was not to
repeat the word or discuss it with other children because it was
inappropriate and if she had any questions to come to me or her father.
That is how you have to put an end to it. The adults and teachers have
to step in and put a stop to it. This really is not a topic for
elementary school kids and if the US wants to accept the gay lifestyle
and make gay marriages and adoptions legal, then they better get their
act in gear as to how this subject is to be dealt with in schools. They
seem to be going about it backwards and making the rules as they go
along.

I'm merely pointing on that the parents didn't necessarily bring this up to the
child out of the blue, that, in fact, it makes a lot more sense that this
information came to the child due to something entirely beyond their control

I disagree. If adults make a big deal out of it, the kids pick right up on it
and focus on it. If it's no real big deal to adults, it washes off the kids'
back like water off a duck.
Closing the barn door after the horses are out never works the way people want
it to - it just makes matters worse.

That doesn't seem to be the case here where I live, unfortunately.
It's the hot topic of late, and certainly not what I send my kids to
school to learn.
I went to my daughters school today at lunch and sat with her class in
the cafeteria. The stools are about 13 inches off the ground. Just
sitting there is an experience all its own, believe me.
Here's one of the latest often heard phrases at elementary school.....
"That's so gay!"

That should be the 'closet' door...

This is addressed to all the parents in this thread:
Listen, please, be upfront with your kids about sexuality as soon as
they hit puberty especially. You don't want other kids messing with
their minds about sex (and what's right and what's wrong about it; and
what's "normal" <-- fill in version of normal here) and abnormal about
it.. and what's even normal and abnormal about their *own* feelings.
Example:
My mother would not talk about sex. Period. She was (is) an awesome
mother - but she just couldn't do it. She felt weird or whatever. So
I learned about sex on HBO (home box office) the movie channel. I had
absolutely *no idea* what masturbation was.. none. I did it for years
but had no idea what it was called - or if anyone else did it. I
would literally *pray* to Jesus after every single time I did it; and
I also promised him I would never do it again. But I always did.
I was guilt ridden.. plagued.
Finally after years of true guilt - at 16 years old, I broke down in
tears and "confessed" to my mother what I had been doing for years. I
was honestly devastated. She explained to me that it was perfectly
normal - that it was called masturbation - and that
the "end part" <-- that's what I called it) was called an orgasm.
I went through years of torment just to finally be SO SO *relieved*
that I wasn't some freak.
What I'm saying guys - tell them and tell them early. Don't be afraid
of it.
