Object: Do World Travelers Really Have A More Valid Worldview?
Do you think it's generally true that world travelers are more in a
position to accurately assess the comparative "value" of their home nation
when measured against their experiences in the nations they've visited?
And, secondarily, do you think that those who never travel, but educate
themselves with much information from eclectic sources (print,
electronic), are able to have a comparable accurate assessment of their
home nation's "value" comparatively?
And, finally, is the length and variety of the stay in a nation a
determining factor as to how accurate their comparative assessment is?
(i.e., is a two-week tourist-trap experience of lesser value than a longer
stay with a resident that includes play and work experience in that
nation?)
I'd truly like to have your opinions, world travelers and stay-at-homers!
Thank you.
Docrodile ;)

I don't think a touristy experience gives you anything of value except
mental relaxation. It certainly wouldn't give you any indication of the
culture of the area/country you're visiting! (After all, they're catering
to YOUR wants, not theirs!)

It can take a long time to become aware of the subtleties of a different
culture or even a different city.

Woodsy. As usual, spot on. Tourism is for holiday-makers who want to
drink, dance and relax.
The average tourist might as well do that in a cupboard for all the
culture they see.
The avid reader, Doc, will 'live' the accounts well enough. For that
person, perhaps reading is enough.
The true wanderer does exactly that, wanders. No plans, simply
impulse. No preference of hotel or seedy back street shed, no
distinction between a broken begger, a rich man of a common street
vendor. Just likes to have the sensation of 'I am here'.
That's the draw. The feeling of 'being really there'. The sights,
smells and noise which a different culture assails one with is so much
stronger than any effect that words can have.
It's a mattr of how much is enough. After reading, I want to
experience. Have to experience. It becomes compulsive. The world is
quite a varied and amazing place.
Stay and read..or go and see. Each to his own choice. For me, there is
only one answer.

'pander'
That's an interesting word I never heard, used or seen before. I had to
look it up. Could be a useful word to add it to my vocabulary, but I'm still
not 100% sure how to use it.

This is the case if you're talking about the help, Woods (ie: the
staff at the hotels, the bartenders, the flight attendants, the cab
drivers etc). They *have* to be nice - it's their job. But the
everyday person on the street, in the clubs, in the bars and in the
restaurants who neither gains nor loses whether they're kind or rude
to you at the end of the day is the one who matters.
At least that's how it worked in my experience when I traveled to

Depends on where you are. If you're in a region where the locals can't
afford any of that, the people you see around are likely other tourists.
I was thinking more like resort towns in the Caribbean than I was, say,
London (which I've never been to, but don't know as it fits a 'touristy'
area).

At least that's how it worked in my experience when I traveled to

Yeah, like I said, I wasn't thinking in terms of visiting a city, more
like visiting a Disneyland (a tourist spot).
