Object: Do you like to use the bible as an excuse to do things?
(taken from http://unixgirl.com/humor/bible1.html - sorry if you've seen
this before)
Laura Schlessinger is a US radio personality who dispenses advice And
usually scoldings to people who call in to her radio show. Recently, she
said that to an Orthodox Jew, homosexuality is an abomination according
to Leviticus 18:22 and cannot be condoned in any circumstance.
The following is an open letter to Dr. Laura penned by a US resident and
also posted on the internet:
Dear Dr. Laura:
Thank you for doing so much to educate people regarding God's Law. I
have learned a great deal from your show, and I try to share that
knowledge with as many people as I can. When someone tries to defend the
homosexual lifestyle, for example, I simply remind them that Leviticus
18:22 clearly states it to be an abomination. End of debate.
I do need some advice from you, however, regarding some of the specific
laws and how to follow them.
a) When I burn a bull on the altar as a sacrifice, I know it creates a
pleasing odour for the Lord (Lev. 1:9). The problem is my neighbours.
They claim the odour is not pleasing to them. Should I smite them?
b) I would like to sell my daughter into slavery, as sanctioned in
Exodus 21:7. In this day and age, what do you think would be a fair
price for her?
c) I know that I am allowed no contact with a woman while she is in her
period of menstrual uncleanliness (Lev. 15:19-24). The problem is, how
do I tell? I have tried asking, but most women take offence.
d) Lev. 25:44 states that I may indeed possess slaves, both male and
female, provided they are purchased from neighbouring nations. A friend
of mine claims that this applies to Mexicans, but not Canadians. Can
you clarify? Why can't I own Canadians?
e) I have a neighbour who insists on working on the Sabbath. Exodus 35:2
clearly states he should be put to death. Am I morally obligated to kill
him myself?
f) A friend of mine feels that even though eating shellfish is an
abomination (Lev. 11:10), it is a lesser abomination than homosexuality.
I don't agree. Can you settle this?
g) Lev. 21:20 states that I may not approach the altar of God if I have
a defect in my sight. I have to admit that I wear reading glasses. Does
my vision have to be 20/20, or is there some wiggle room here?
h) Most of my male friends get their hair trimmed, including the hair
around their temples, even though this is expressly forbidden by
Lev.19:27. How should they die?
i) I know from Lev. 11:6-8 that touching the skin of a dead pig makes me
unclean, but may I still play football if I wear gloves?
j) My uncle has a farm. He violates Lev. 19:19 by planting two different
crops in the same field, as does his wife by wearing garments made of
two different kinds of thread (cotton/polyester blend). He also tends
to curse and blaspheme a lot. Is it really necessary that we go to all
the trouble of getting the whole town together to stone them?
(Lev.24:10-16) Couldn't we just burn them to death at a private family
affair like we do with people who sleep with their in-laws? (Lev. 20:14)
I know you have studied these things extensively, so I am confident you
can help. Thank you again for reminding us that God's word is eternal
and unchanging. Your devoted disciple and adoring fan.

Why? Are you under the assumption that I'm an Orthodox Jew?
Nevertheless, I do have a response to this -- but I know that if I

Therefore, I'll take the advice of a recent poster who reminded me of

Perhaps he's following the disciples...didn't one of them 'deny

Anyway, bibles are very useful things, particularly those enormous
'family' editions. They make wonderful door props, and can help you

Yes, that was Peter, the most faithful of all his followers, upon whom
it's said that Jesus would build his "church". This is why the Roman
Catholic church took great pains to make claim to Peter being the first
Pope.

I have an extra one that I'm trying to get rid of, want it? I have like
12 different bibles (plus a copy of the Tanakh), and my sister saw one at
a garage sale and thought I needed another (huge) one - King James

Persecution? From this group? You think I fear *words* on my monitor?

I's not a Christian required to 'defend' the word of God? Or is that the
Muslims?
But for your general interest, I've read entire Bible, more than once. I

When was the last time a tea leaf suggested you love your neighbor as
yourself, Mondo?

I only drink tea from the tea bags, so I have never get the chance to
try
reading the leaves. So to answer honestly, never.

There ya go, it's all based on personal intimate experience.

Set the tea free! Release it from butchering and bag and see if it
speaks
to our heart of hearts!

See the tea.. be, be the tea.. (words of wisdom from Caddy Shack).

..On your death-bed you will receive total consciousness..
so I've got that going for me.. which is nice..

As you stand upon the shores of the great River Jordan then, Randy, just
think back all those "fairy tales" they told you when you were growing up.

If one looks at the header to this thread Mr L the simple answer is
***** NO! Imagine using a saga book to decide your actions. A book of
fuckin' fairy tales, that actually rebukes fairies, (queers).
Disturbingly enough, up to 85% and probably more actually believe this
bible ***** in good oul' America. What is wrong with you people? Of
course Mr L I am aware that you are not one of these twats...but could

It's tough getting into discussions about religion because there's so much
passion involved on either side. If you're going to tell your side of it
"right" then things can get deep and complicated. The discussion will
always go off in all kinds of directions. It can be tough following just
one thread in a big tapestry.
But the short answer is that people have sifted the truth of the "fairy
tale" Christ thru their own corrupt psychology and this will always result
in violence. Physical violence as well as spiritual violence. There's
nothing sadder than what happens when you wrap Jesus around your own anger
and you damage people. There's nothing sadder than when you wrap Jesus
around the American flag and justify invasion, murder and domination.
There's nothing sadder than when you outrightly judge a homosexual and
condemn the very people, among others, that Jesus came to introduce to an
all encompassing union and intimacy.
I had a longer answer but distilled it here. We'll see where the thread
goes from here and if it can be kept orderly and friendly.

When threatened, we are allowed to defend ourselves. I'm sure you're
aware of that fact.

You're saying 85% of Americans feel that way? Because that was the
context of the question you were asked.

Odd, isn't it, how someone so devoted to the light can be so blind, so
wrong. It's clear that personal bias leads to consistent problems with
perception.

Thanks for the link. We need more people making a fuss about the obvious.
"Delusional *****" (I sense a new parlor game) needs to be openly and
consistently mocked for the last remnant of his supporters to see the light.
It must be that they, including Steven, simply have to repeat the same
discredited trash in order to maintain their equilibrium. As if saying the
same tripe over and over makes it real and keeps them secure. I guess if
you can argue something well enough you might as well go ahead and believe
it no matter how much damage you've done.

John was responding to Perseid. All you have to do is read the last
"wrote" attribution to figure out who someone is responding to - it's not
exactly rocket science, here.

There is absolutely no question that it is rocket science, Woods. It's
obvious. Only you fringe leftists would think otherwise.
