Explosion targets house of Muslim politician in Serbia
18/04/2006
(Novi Pazar/Serbia, DTT-NET.COM) - An explosion targeted last night a
Muslim politician in town of Novi Pazar, in the region of Sandzak in
south-west of Serbia populated mainly by Muslim community, the second
explosion in last ten days as political tensions increase between local
political parties. No civilian injuries are reported.
The blast which occurred at the house of Fevzi Muric, leader of Party
for Sandzak is the second in last ten days and police authorities said
that explosion device seem to be the same as that one used on 10th of
April in front of the building of municipal assembly, local Radio 100
Plus reported.
The explosion damaged the garage, windows of Muric's and neighbouring
house.
Tensions in the town have increased lately since the dismissal of
parliament of the Novi Pazar municipality by Serbian government.
The explosion attack happened just hours after Muric announced that his
party will boycott the referendum on the confidence vote on the
president of the municipality Sulejman Ugljanin, if Serbian government
is to impose the composition of the municipal election commission.
Serbian government has argued that the dismissal was made because of
irregular budget adopted by local assembly.
Political parties of the town are divided on the issue which represents
another burden to their ongoing disputes inside the parliament.
The Sandzak Democratic Party (led by Rasim Ljajic, who stepped down
from his post at Serbian government in protest to the dismissal of
local assembly) together with Party for Sandzak of Fevzi Muric form the
majority at the assembly. Both parties have accused the president of
the municipality Sulejman Ugljanin (considered as close to Belgrade
authorities) for irregular spending from municipality budget.
The majority at the parliament has called citizens for a municipal
confidence referendum vote on Ugljanin.
The dismissal caused harsh reactions by the majority of parliament
members. Local Radio 100 Plus reported that the president of the
parliament Azem Hajdarevic has warned that "situation could
radicalise the political situation in Sandzak and that Serbian
government should be held responsible for eventual consequences".
Same warnings were made as well by Rasim Ljajic.
Following the dismissal of the Sandzak assembly by Belgrade a bomb
exploded in front of the building of assembly of the town, damaging
several vehicles and windows in the vicinity of the municipality
building. No civilian injures were reported.
Novi Pazar is the biggest town in the region of Sandzak which is a
geographical region in Serbia and Montenegro. Its territory is divided
between Serbia and Montenegro republics. It derives its name from the
Sanjak of Novi Pazar, a former Ottoman administrative district that
existed until the Balkan Wars of 1912.
It stretches from the border with Bosnia and Herzegovina to Kosovo on
an area of 8,686 square kilometers. Six municipalities of Sandzak
belong to Serbia (Novi Pazar, Sjenica, Tutin, Prijepolje, Nova Varos
and Priboj), and six to Montenegro (Pljevlja, Bijelo Polje, Berane,
Andrijevica, Rozaje and Plav).
