FBI raises reward for info on cult leader
DENVER - The FBI is increasing its reward for help as it searches for
the elusive leader of the Fundamentalist Church of Latter Day Saints.
Warren Jeffs is charged with unlawful flight to avoid prosecution.
The FBI is boosting its reward for his capture and conviction from
$10,000 to $60,000.
The FLDS has about 10,000 members. Some live in the southern Colorado
town of Mancos, but most members reside in the Utah-Arizona border town
of Colorado City--Hilldale. The sect split from the Mormons a century
ago so that members could continue the practice of polygamy.
"No man, even if they control the lives of 10,000 followers, is above
the law in the United States," said Terry Goddard, Arizona's attorney
general.
Jeffs' 32-year-old brother Seth is expected to go on trial for helping
his brother avoid arrest. Prosecutors say police arrested Seth Jeffs
with nearly $150,000 in cash and pre-paid phone cards in his car which
they say he admitted were for his brother.
