Find a workable solution [or shut them down with force]
I grew up on a Montana cattle ranch with a creek running through it. I
therefore have an acute awareness of the importance of clean water to
the health and livelihood of rural families.
Any mining exploration or process, such as coal bed methane extraction,
can bring economic benefits to Montana, but also has the potential to
ruin the all-important water resources. If an area's water quality is
ruined from irresponsible extraction methods, it affects the well-being
and income of the farmer/rancher, the quality of food that comes from
the land, and ultimately adversely affects life for everyone. But, if
coal bed methane extraction is done in such a manner as to retain or
restore the water quality, it is a win-win situation for all involved:
the oil/gas companies, the farmer/ranchers and all the rest of us.
Northern Plains Resource Council is not trying to stop coal bed methane
exploration, but is working to find the common ground where exploration
companies and rural landowners can compromise and find a workable
solution that is fair to everyone.
